Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking on and around VCU’s campus causes a major headache for all drivers. Freshmen are allowed to bring their cars to VCU, but it can sometimes be more of a problem than a convenience. When students need to go home or even go shopping, having a car is nice. However, parking in the garages is on a first-come, first-served basis. Students need to purchase parking permits the day they go on sale for a chance to get spots directly on campus. Permits are expensive, and some students who commute and need one can’t even afford it. When students live in an on-campus apartment, they receive one parking permit as part of their living expenses. Students use their VCU IDs to swipe in and out of their assigned garage. If you don’t have a pass and forget to bring your ID to prove you’re a student, it will cost five dollars.

There is on-street parking around campus that is limited to two-hour increments, and even that is hard to find. Students
can find some of the unlimited streets a few blocks from campus, but those spots tend to fill fast with professors and
University staff who don’t want to pay for parking either. Except in the parking decks, most parking around VCU is parallel. A lot of students who come to VCU are intimidated by parallel parking and get annoyed. It’s something you get used to—you just need to practice.

What Parking?

In order for someone to visit, since I live off-campus, they have to find a street to park on where they won't get towed because we don't have a parking pass for the school. The parking garages are almost always full or say that they are for students with parking passes only.

Terrible

If you bring a car, be mindful: Parking garages are fairly expensive if you want one near your dorm. And parking on the street for long periods of time is always a slight risk, since there is usually heavy traffic in Richmond, especially near the dorm residences.

The Ugly Beast of the City

Parking passes for one of the Campuses many parking decks are hot ticket items and cost around $175 dollars a semester. There is very limited street parking and if you vioulate any time or parking limits you will get ticketed or towed. However, there is a lot of off campus housing withing easy walking distance so a lot of students avoid the parking problem.

Getting a Parking Permit

Students can purchase decals at the beginning of each
semester. The main student parking decks are Main Street Deck, West Broad Street Deck, Cary Street Deck, and Bowe Street Deck. There are other small lots around campus, but it’s hard to get parking permits for them because they fill up quickly. You must sign up early to get a permit close to the dorms on campus. Once a student is issued a space, he is given a permit to hang in his car, and his ID is activated to allow him to enter and leave the garage. Permits only work for the garage to which they are assigned.

Did You Know?

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot: Your best bet is to go into a garage, but even they fill up quickly depending on the time of day.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here: Anywhere on campus without a permit during the time classes are in session.
