Best Things

  1. Students and faculty are both incredibly diverse.
  2. The internship possibilities are endless with all of the companies downtown, including seven Fortune 500 businesses.
  3. Although everyone might not be interested in basketball, everyone joined together to celebrate VCU’s buzzer-beater victory over Duke in the 2007 NCAA tournament.
  4. Richmond Coliseum is five minutes away and attracts big-name artists and events, such as Tim McGraw Faith Hill, the Jonas Brothers, the Blue Man Group, the Harlem Globe Trotters, and monster truck rallies.
  5. Hungry? If you drive down West Broad Street long enough, you will pass restaurants serving every type of cuisine.
  6. When it’s nice outside, Monroe Park fills with students who may be sketching pictures for art classes, playingFrisbee or soccer, or just laying out enjoying the day.
  7. From government to Greek life, recreational to religious activity, and community service to student media, there is a student organization for every type of student at VCU. There is even a Pancake Club.
  8. VCU offers several study abroad programs to countries such as China, England, Greece, Italy, Peru, and Spain.
  9. Missed a great movie when it was in the theater? No worries—just check the schedule at the Byrd Theater in Carytown. Popular movies are shown there before they hit DVD for 2$.
  10. It’s in the city of Richmond. VCU is diverse, and there are lots of things to explore when time needs to be filled.

Worst Things

  1. Cheap off-campus housing is cheap for a reason.
  2. Construction around campus doesn’t just cause traffic—all of the noise created causes headaches as well.
  3. Crossing major streets during the busy parts of the day can sometimes feel like you’re in a game of Frogger.
  4. Departments at VCU seem to be independent of one another.
  5. Fast connections aren’t always the case with the VCU Internet network.
  6. Parking! It can be expensive to buy a permit each semester, and spots aren’t guaranteed.
  7. Slippery when wet! Rain and brick sidewalks don’t mix.
  8. Sometimes it can be a fight for students to get into the classes they want.
  9. Thirsty? Drinks from vending machines on campus cost $1.25. It may not be faster, but it’s definitely cheaper to get a drink from the cart vendor on the side of the road.
  10. Want to live on campus after your freshman year? Cross your fingers! Students sign up for a lottery, and it’s all luck after that.
