Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because VCU has centered its main campus location around Monroe Park, students are able to walk from dorms to classes and other places around the city. Driving your car downtown to go to an internship or job can be an expensive pain for students. Parking is about $6 a day. VCU does offer a free GRTC Campus Connector bus service offering 11 stops to students who may live downtown or need to attend the Medical Campus for classes and lectures. You only need to show your VCU ID for the free ride. The buses pick up from locations about every 10 minutes. It takes about 15 minutes to get from the main VCU campus to the Medical College. It is the easiest and most hassle-free way to travel back and forth.

If you need to go to a far-away destination, Richmond International Airport is only 11 miles away from campus and offers flights comparable to the other major airports in the state. It’s also common for students that don’t have cars to take Greyhound or Amtrak to get wherever they may be going. There are so many different options for students to get out of town, and if you’re planning a trip, you can compare prices to get the best deal.

Plenty Within Walking Distance

If you go to the Monroe Park campus and don't get stuck living at MCV, transportation isn't really an issue. All the necessities are pretty much in walking distance, but a car is nice for groceries and the like. The drunk bus (2BNB - to the bottom and back) is nice for hitting the bar scene, if somewhat slow.

Getting Around VCU

All VCU students have the chance to get a free public transportation bus pass at the beginning of the year. This is very convenient because the buses will take you almost anywhere you need to go. There are grocery stores, shops, and entertainment that is also on campus and a short walk away. Our school offers zipcar where you can rent a car for $8 an hour. We have 4 cars on campus, two of which are hybrid and environmentally friendly. If you choose to bring your car there are several parking decks where you may purchase a pass to park. The down side is that these passes are very expensive (about $200) and you have to buy one every semester. If you choose not to park in the garage there is plenty of parking on the streets you just have to be careful when you park because the city does do street cleaning on certain days.

LOVE GRTC

Living on the MCV campus, I have to say that the campus connecter is a great bus. I have also traveled around on other buses and those services are just as well. Bus drivers are extremely friendly.
