Difficult for military scholarships, easy for athletes.

No freedom. No fun. Everything about it is horrible.

First, VMI was a military institution, therefore you had to live on campus, or what we called post. There was no other option for us. We lived in a barracks where we did everything except for classes and eating our meals. The style of living takes some getting used to because you do not have your typical amenities and must learn how to live with out them.

Getting help to pay for school wasn't too difficult. Half of my tuition was paid for through financial aid and the rest was through student loans. Most of the financial aid was through an alumni who had set up a grant fund for cadets that were from out of state.

Athletics are a big part at VMI. The biggest thing is the football team. It is the one team that has the most invested in it, despite their inability to win games. However, they may not be the best team in the country we always cheered them on until the end. The other athletic programs were all excellent. Many of the athletes had to deal with more than just sports, but also military duties alongside of academics and athletics.

A lot of rainy days during the fall-spring, and extremely hot in the summer
College Sophomore 2012-12-29T21:37:25Z
The food at VMI is decent but it lacks diversity from day to day and so they get very boring very quickly.

There is no Greek life at Virginia Military Institute.

There are not many scholarship opportunities to be had here.

Only seniors are allowed to have vehicles on campus. For seniors the parking kind of sucks.

The campus dining is nothing special. People often complain and it is not as good as most large universities.
College Junior 2012-11-14T03:08:11Z
Most computers at VMI do not have a fast connection and therefore it becomes frustrating when trying to work online.

Health & Safety:
There is almost zero campus crime at our school. Most importantly, we have a single sanction honor code that everybody follows and prevents most criminal activity.

VMI offers an exellent opportunity to really exeed all your expectations as far as education is concerned. They have an amazing selection of professors that not only provide amaing insight in the classroom, but are readily available outside the classroom as well. There are many quiet places to study and ther are great resources ar your disposal.

We at VMI are very proud of our sports team and it is a huge part of campus life. Team Spirit is a major factor and it couldnt be high. Win or lose the Keydet give it 110%, both on the field and in the stands.

Lexington is a small town, therefore variety is a little lacking. Its makes up for this by its historic significance and its landmarks. Its quaint shops and restuarants offer and cozy atmosphere. I suggest you visit the VMI Museum, which has the stuffed body of Stonewall Jacksons horse.

The food at the chow hall is ok but become tiring due to the lack of variety. For a quick bite to eat of a cup of coffee the PX offers a nice selection of alternative to the dining hall. The only problem is that the food there is a little over priced.

Lexington is a small town. It is basically built around VMI and the neighboring college, Washington and Lee. There are many small town shops and restaurants in walking distance. Also, Roanoke, as well as an array of neighboring "party schools" are within or just outside of an hour away if you want to take a weekend for some fun.

VMI does offer much financial aid for students that need it. It of course is dependent on your (or your parents') income. Also, there are several military scholarships that you can get through one of the 4 ROTC departments. Its easier if you get an ROTC scholarship coming into VMI, however, it is still possible to get one later.

I go to a small Military College in a small town. I like that the classes are small. My largest class outside of ROTC was less than 30 people. Because of this, all of my professors know who I am and are willing to give me personal help. The workload is challenging, yet with proper time management it is easy to excel. Also the Alumni network here is absolutely amazing. I know I am in good hands, even after I graduate.

Reliable Most of the Time – For the most part, there is always a place on post to print something off. Sometimes the network goes down, but it's not for more than a day. We don't get wireless in our rooms, but the internet works just fine there. I suggest having your own computer.

Extremely Strict – If you break a little rule, you are punished more so than I think you should be. of course, it is a military school, but it is way more strict than it needs to be.

Great Environment – The staff is extremely helpful and always there to help out. I have seen all of the instructors come in after hours to help students and give them review sessions before tests. Our major is really small which helps with the class room environment. It's a tough course load since VMI gives little time to study, but it is sill do-able thanks to the instructors being understanding.

Respectful of Each Other but Not Always Liked – Athletes are supported more by the school, and they get out of a lot of activities that regular cadets must do. The best teams that perform are basketball and baseball. We have pretty good athletic facilities.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
