Other Options

  • Burke Johnston Student Center (known by students as GBJ) houses a Burger King and small coffee and sandwich shop. Though the meal plan won’t cover these meals, it can be more convenient to eat at GBJ than to trek all the way across campus to one of the dining halls. There are also a number of places to eat around the perimeter of campus, as well as near the Math Emporium for students taking classes or studying there.

College Prowler Take

All college students love to eat, and there seems to be something for everyone when it comes to food on Tech’s campus. If you’re super hungry, D2 offers the all-you-can-eat option. D2 is also a good place to find meals specially prepared for vegetarian and vegan students. For a wider variety of foods there is Owens Food Court, which features international foods, deli sandwiches, smoothies, a salad bar, Philly cheesesteaks, burgers, and desserts. It’s easy to find healthy choices in each dining hall, and students can go online to find out nutritional information for all the dishes served around Tech. However, if you’re craving some fast food, take your meal plan and head on over to Hokie Grill where you can visit Pizza Hut, Chick-fil-A, and Cinnabon. Many Tech students purchase meal plans and eat on campus a few times a week. Freshmen are required to get a meal plan and can choose from three meal plan options.

Eating on campus is very popular at Tech, so sometimes dining halls get very crowded during the lunch and dinner rush. With 11 dining halls to choose from and hundreds of different dishes, it takes a while to try it all. Even though freshmen are required to purchase a meal plan, most don’t mind, and some students enjoy Tech food so much that they continue to get meal plans for the rest of their years as students.

Food is decent. There is a lot of variety, and the atmospheres of the dining centers are all very interesting. Sometimes, the food can get old because, although there are many dining centers, they offer most of the same food every day.

West End is awesome—nothing hits the spot like their soup options on a cold Blacksburg day. I really like Au Bon Pain; however, it is very expensive. I’m a huge fan of the Freshens Frozen Yogurt stations at Hokie Grill and Owens Food Court.
