Freshmen Required to Live on Campus
Yes
College Prowler Take
Virginia Tech has 27 dorms and 18 Greek houses for students. Freshmen are required to live on campus their first year. Many choose to make that their one and only year in a dorm. A lottery system is used to pick who stays on campus past freshman year, and space is limited, so getting a spot can be a challenge. The majority of dorms are large with small rooms, no air-conditioning, and hall bathrooms. The few dorms that are suite-style, carpeted, and air conditioned are reserved for upperclassmen or leadership students. While dorms may be lacking in style and comfort, living in them does have its advantages. If you live on campus, you can head back to your room for a quick nap between classes. Dorm living is also a great way to get to know people your first year at school. The dorms also offer extras, like shared kitchens, laundry rooms, and study lounges. Resident Advisors (RAs) are assigned to halls in the dorms. They’re there to make sure students don’t get in trouble, but they tend to be pretty lenient. If they see something suspicious, they have to follow up on it, but they don’t police the halls. They also don’t enforce the opposite-sex visiting hours very strictly. Most dorms have visiting hours from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. for the opposite sex, but no one comes around to make sure all the girls or all the guys are out. Also, Main Campbell, Harper, Hillcrest, New Residence, Peddrew-Yates, and Payne all have 24-hour visitation policies, so visitors can stay as long as you’d like.

The dorms are...
The dorms are dorms—decent-sized rooms with a sink and mirror. If the dorms aren't your scene, you can live off campus the next three years (or four if you're in Architecture). There are plenty of apartments and townhouses—just be sure to get your applications in by Thanksgiving break.

Dorms are pretty nice, but bring your fan though, since most are not air conditioned. New Residential is pretty nice, though it may be difficult to get in to. |

Dorms are a wonderful way to live your freshman year. You meet amazing people, and it makes everything on campus very accessible. If you have an 8 a.m. class, you don’t have to wake up extra early to drive over to campus, and you don’t have to deal with the atrocious parking on campus (or lack thereof). |

Dorm life here can either suck or...
Dorm life here can either suck or rock, depending on what you’re like. They’re generally small and loud, and you have to share showers with the whole hall. If you get along with your roommate, have a decent pair of headphones, and aren’t bothered by someone taking a shower next to you, you’ll probably like it. The close quarters make it easy to meet your neighbors. Stay away from Thomas Hall. It’s way on the edge of campus, away from everything, and it’s right next to the power plant. |

Did You Know? All dorms provide Ethernet access to students. When the weather gets warm, head out to “Slusher Beach,” the grassy area behind Slusher Tower and Slusher Wing. Why is it called the beach? Because that’s where everyone goes to get some sun. All dorms provide Ethernet access to students in individual dorm rooms, as well as wireless access in most lounges. Slusher Tower is the tallest residential building on campus; it can sway up to six inches in the wind.
