Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Virginia Tech has had some upsetting events in the past that may have hindered the diversity of the school. Of the two land-grant universities in Virginia, Virginia Tech is the historically white university and seems to be having somewhat of a difficult time overcoming this reputation. However, diversity at Tech is greatly increasing. While demographically more than 70 percent of the student body is white, it doesn’t always appear that way around campus. Dozens of races and ethnicities attend Tech, and students are generally very accepting of the diversity around them.

The majority of Virginia Tech students are white, but many other ethnicities are represented and seem to mix into the student body well, with very little tension. In the past, Tec hasn’t had the best reputation regarding diversity, but the school is making a conscious effort to promote diversity, in all aspects. Cultural demonstrations, such as the International Street Fair that showcases food, dance, and art from nations all around the world, are put on all throughout the year, and with clubs like the Asian American Student Union, LGBTA, and the Hindu Student Council, students have the opportunity to get involved and represent any demographic group they choose.

This School Is Mostly White

A large majority of the people on campus are white. However, the school is just as diverse as America is as a whole. Even with the lack of diversity, it is easy for minority students to find others on campus that share the same ethnic/racial background. It is also very easy to be accepted at this school because there are over 700 clubs on campus so there is something for everybody at Virginia Tech.

Could Be Better

There are students from all over the world attending Virginia Tech. It seems that the majority of graduate students are international students, and several campus programs are dedicated to improving diversity and helping international students feel more comfortable. There is always a place where students with different backgrounds and interests can find their niche. Although there is immense diversity throughout the school, some programs seem to attract only certain types of students. For example, the majority of undergraduate engineering majors seem to be white males.
