College Prowler Take

“These buildings look like castles,” one student remarked on his first visit to Tech. Indeed, some of the buildings at Virginia Tech do look a little like castles, with their limestone exterior and unique architecture. However, some of the most ancient looking buildings have some of the most state-of-the-art setups inside, and buildings are continuing to go up. In 2009, a brand new residence hall with apartments for upperclassmen will open, along with a new athletics facility. The buildings that have been at Tech for a while are also in pretty good shape and are kept up with repairs and renovations. In Fall 2009, East Ambler Johnston Hall will undergo a $65 million renovation, and Shultz Dining Center will be razed and completely rebuilt.

Students at Tech are most impressed by the gyms, dining halls, and the newer classrooms on campus. Virginia Tech continues to improve old structures while building new ones. As for dorms, though, the majority could use some work (of the facilities on campus, the dorms are the least impressive). Tech’s campus does have a neat, unified look because of the stone on the exterior of all the buildings. While the stone doesn’t affect much on the inside of the buildings, it does make the campus attractive.

Outside, many sand volleyball courts are placed among the dorms, and there is a central basketball park in the residential area. Two gyms are located on campus: War Memorial, an old-but-still-equipped gym with no air conditioning, and McComas, which is currently expanding an entire new area. There is also a large indoor basketball complex being built. Food courts and dining halls are very delicious, and West End was even nationally ranked.

Best facilities in the nation. We have two huge student gyms that are each two stories. They each have full basketball courts, huge weight rooms, full swimming pools (open to students), racquetball, and much more. Also the library is gigantic. It is about seven or eight stories and has anything you would ever want. Also, most library material can be accessed online, as long as you are an enrolled student.

The athletic facilities on campus are great. We have two gyms, and one has a basketball court and swimming pool. There are plenty of outdoor tracks and tennis courts. There’s even a street hockey court. You name the sport, and you can probably play it here. The student centers are decent. You’ll mostly go there for food or classes, though. Squires Student Center has pool tables, bowling lanes, and an arcade; however, the student centers are usually very crowded, so I wouldn’t recommend studying in them.

The facilities vary greatly in how nice they are, because some buildings on campus were erected in the 1800s, and some were built just a few years back. Tech has a tendency to build new facilities, such as a gym (McComas), but keep the previously used gym in operation (Hokie Gym in War Memorial).
