Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are many social fraternities and sororities at Virginia Tech for students to choose from. There are also numerous service, business, and academic fraternities and sororities. While many students find Greek life to be fulfilling and fun, there’s no need to join a fraternity or sorority in order to fit in. Fraternities do throw lots of parties, but these are usually open to everyone on campus. Greek parties off campus tend to be better than the ones on Oak Lane, which is considered on campus by the University. Oak Lane tends to be watched closely by the police, and therefore partiers there have to be more careful. Fraternity and sorority members hang out together, throw parties together, and generally know each other better than they know non-Greek students. Non-Greek students are by no means excluded or treated differently by Greek-affiliated students, but there is some separation between the two groups when it comes to the social scene.

Besides going to parties and wearing letters, fraternities and sororities do a lot of good around campus and the community. They organize fundraisers, clean up streets, and raise money for all kinds of causes. Those involved in Greek organizations are also able to network with alumni and others associated with their organization. Though many Tech students embrace the Greek life, fraternities and sororities don’t dominate the social scene. Just getting involved in student organizations can provide some of the same social opportunities and networking available through Greek organizations. There isn’t really any animosity between Greeks and non-Greeks.

Greek Hang With Greeks

The Greek scene at Virginia Tech is what you want to make it. If you choose to go Greek, it will basically be your whole social life. Girls who join Sororities tend to hang out with mostly Fraternity guys when they go out. This is fostered by the weekly socials (or mixers)that the Fraternities and Sororities have and because it is easier to hear about Greek parties when you are already Greek. However, if students are not Greek, they are not looked down upon by other students. The campus is a majority non-Greek so there are plenty of social groups to hang out with if you aren't Greek. Because there is not that much interaction between Greeks and non-Greeks besides classes, non-Greeks tend not to understand the "Greek" lifestyle. All of the 12 current sororities have individual houses on campus in Oak Lane. Oak Lane is a secluded section of campus that is strictly for Greek housing. In addition to the 12 sororities that have houses there, 4 fraternities have houses there as well. The rest of the fraternities have houses off campus, most of them close to downtown where the bars are. By the Fall of 2012, there will be the first houses of the new Oak Lane built. These will be more traditional Greek houses that are modeled after southern fraternity and sorority houses. This new section of Oak Lane will be modeled after the South Carolina Greek housing.

No Big Deal

Greek life is a part of the community, but it doesn't dominate the scene at Va Tech. Homecoming revolves around the sororities and fraternities, but other than that, they are nice for the parties.

Not Too Informed

Greek is very big here but i haven't really been able to see what they're about. They always throw parties. Most of the frat house are on Roanoke Street, five minute walk from campus. They are very popular and are very influential.
