College Prowler Take
Virginia Tech and the town of Blacksburg provide various nightlife choices for students. Downtown Blacksburg consists mainly of bars, most of which have strict carding policies. Bring two ID’s if you’re over 21, even if you look (or are) 35. There are always apartment and house parties going on, many thrown by fraternities in Oak Lane. Be careful when heading out to Oak Lane though, the police tend to hang around there a lot and break up parties. Going to fraternity parties does mean a free ride, though. Greek parties send out designated drivers to pick up party-going students on campus. Also, Blacksburg Transit, Blacksburg’s bus system, has routes going out to all major apartment complexes, so getting to a party safely is usually easy to do, as long as you remember to catch the bus before 2 a.m. Throughout the year, Tech brings all kinds of entertainment to campus, including comedians, bands, plays, hypnotists, and classical music. Sometimes student organizations have weekend events, like the dances on the weekends put together by the Swing Club. Students who want to get out of Blacksburg can take weekend trips to go camping or to spend some time in Roanoke. Blacksburg has a number of bars, dance clubs, and coffee shops to hang out in on the weekends. Tech brings in entertainment in various forms and provides them on campus, making it accessible for all students. Unfortunately, since Blacksburg is so small and downtown is only two blocks long, it doesn’t take too much time to check out all the bars and clubs. Even so, most students spend their time in Blacksburg and find something to do rather than leaving for the weekend.

House Parties All the Way
B+
It's easy enough to go to a bar or club and have a good time, but apartment parties are everywhere and easily accessible. There's never a shortage of places to go as long as you've got friends. Ask around, there's always something going on and chances are you'll line up a few backups as well.

Have to Look to Find the Right Places
B-
House parties get really crowded and are often busted by the police. Walking between parties is a huge downfall especially when it's really cold outside. Bars are mainly for older students and aren't a huge part of the night life until you turn 21. Small house parties are fun, you just have to find the right people to be around.

The bars and clubs are decent, but there aren’t a lot of choices, compared to a large town university. |

The parties on campus either suck or are nonexistent because of anti-campus party measures. The bars and clubs are okay, but the brunt of the partying goes down in apartments and houses all over Blacksburg. |

Parties off campus are great, especially on football game weekends, because alumni come back. They are always on a mission to party with the students. Most parties are at houses or apartments off campus, at fraternities in Oak Lane, or off campus downtown. |

Blacksburg has more of a bar scene than a club scene, but if you’re in the mood to dance, there are plenty of places to shake it.
Bar Prowler
Downtown is small, but active. The weekends here start on Thursday night, and bars have specials throughout the week to encourage students to come out Monday through Wednesday, as well. The small, centralized nature of downtown does make it easy to hit a couple different places in a night. It’s also easy to run into friends without even planning to.
Organization Parties
Greek organizations are always ready to party, and usually everyone’s invited to the fraternity house. Sororities aren’t allowed to have parties, but they do have socials downtown. Student organizations sometimes put on events at bars downtown, usually having a band or DJ involved. Greek parties are well attended, but other organizations don’t get the word out as well.
Club Listings

Known as TOTS by students on campus, this bar is very popular in the Greek scene. This is the place to be if you’re a fraternity or sorority member partying the night away. Non-Greeks can be found here, too, especially for karaoke night, or if they’re out to drink a “rail,” one of TOTS’ drink concoctions. A rail is a combination of all the liquor on the “rail” and has six different shots.
This town is all about pool, so Sharkey’s meets the demand. They just moved to a new location, but still have pool tables and great specials.
The Underground draws an older crowd of locals and grad students. It’s also usually less packed than the other bars, so it’s a good place to go for a more chill night of hanging out and shooting darts. London Underground Pub Limited 112 N. Main St. Blacksburg (540) 552-9044
