Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Virginia Tech and the town of Blacksburg provide various nightlife choices for students. Downtown Blacksburg consists mainly of bars, most of which have strict carding policies. Bring two ID’s if you’re over 21, even if you look (or are) 35. There are always apartment and house parties going on, many thrown by fraternities in Oak Lane. Be careful when heading out to Oak Lane though, the police tend to hang around there a lot and break up parties. Going to fraternity parties does mean a free ride, though. Greek parties send out designated drivers to pick up party-going students on campus. Also, Blacksburg Transit, Blacksburg’s bus system, has routes going out to all major apartment complexes, so getting to a party safely is usually easy to do, as long as you remember to catch the bus before 2 a.m.

Throughout the year, Tech brings all kinds of entertainment to campus, including comedians, bands, plays, hypnotists, and classical music. Sometimes student organizations have weekend events, like the dances on the weekends put together by the Swing Club. Students who want to get out of Blacksburg can take weekend trips to go camping or to spend some time in Roanoke. Blacksburg has a number of bars, dance clubs, and coffee shops to hang out in on the weekends. Tech brings in entertainment in various forms and provides them on campus, making it accessible for all students. Unfortunately, since Blacksburg is so small and downtown is only two blocks long, it doesn’t take too much time to check out all the bars and clubs. Even so, most students spend their time in Blacksburg and find something to do rather than leaving for the weekend.

Nightlife- Party Scene

Great apartment parties, especially in terrace view. There are some good frat parties too if you're into that. VT parties typically include at least one keg and a bucket of jungle juice. The bus runs until 2pm, but only takes you back to campus. Hooptie (taxi service) is a great option.

Search for Fun

Nightlife can be a very fun experience if one is willing to search for the action. If a student is under 21, then the Downtown night scene is out of the question. People under 21 have to take the transit, searching out different apartment complexes to find something worthwhile. The best bet for underclassmen is to have connections.

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

Blacksburg has more of a bar scene than a club scene, but if you’re in the mood to dance, there are plenty of places to shake it.

Bar Prowler

Downtown is small, but active. The weekends here start on Thursday night, and bars have specials throughout the week to encourage students to come out Monday through Wednesday, as well. The small, centralized nature of downtown does make it easy to hit a couple different places in a night. It’s also easy to run into friends without even planning to.

Organization Parties

Greek organizations are always ready to party, and usually everyone’s invited to the fraternity house. Sororities aren’t allowed to have parties, but they do have socials downtown. Student organizations sometimes put on events at bars downtown, usually having a band or DJ involved. Greek parties are well attended, but other organizations don’t get the word out as well.
