College Prowler Take
Many Tech students choose to live off campus after their freshman year because of limited on-campus housing and the desire for more room. There are a ton of apartment complexes, townhouses, houses, and rooms for rent around Blacksburg. Off-campus housing can be a little more expensive than living on campus, but many students find it worth it for the added comfort, space, and privacy. A lot of off-campus housing is within walking distance to Tech, and bus routes go out to all the housing that is farther away. Students who live off campus find it easier to walk, ride a bike, or take the bus than to face the parking situation at Tech. The apartment complexes around town split up their renters into buildings for students and professionals, so the students can party and the professionals can get some sleep. One big problem with moving off campus is noise violations. Blacksburg residents like their sleep and have even passed legislation that has increased a noise violation from a class-four misdemeanor to a class-two misdemeanor. That means a noise violation could cost you $1,000 or six months in jail. Tech students recommend living off campus if you can afford it. While you do miss out on the closeness of dining halls and class, you usually gain more space and comfort. It is a pain to have to be careful about volume control or risk receiving a class-two misdemeanor, but most students learn to deal with this. There are definitely lots of options and price ranges for students moving off campus.

There are many apartments...
There are many apartments available off-campus. I think it is convenient to live on campus because you are close to all the buildings, but living off campus seems to be more like a home. The buses run to almost every apartment complex, and they are all located close to campus allowing people to walk or ride their bikes. Most of the apartments are cheaper than on campus housing.

Apartments are the best. If you...
Apartments are the best. If you can get an apartment after your freshman year, it is worth it. The dorms are great to meet people, but it is a lot better to have some of your own space and a happy place to come back to. Tech can tend to get slightly depressing living on campus all the time, especially if it is a gray day on the Drillfield. So if you can, get an apartment, there are many that are close enough to walk or drive to campus from and they are easy to find.

Off Campus housing is offered...
Off Campus housing is offered everywhere. If you don't have a roommate arranged when it gets down to the wire, there are plenty of oppurtunities for random housing off campus, and you could meet some of your closest friends in those oppurtunities. It's completely worth it to experience the difference in social environments, and you wouldn't regret it by any means.

Housing off campus after freshman year is convenient. If a student wants to live off campus, he can find housing; the better housing goes most quickly, however. |

Living off campus is great (just having your own room and washer and dryer makes it worth it). There are tons of places to live, some within walking distance and some that are not, but there is the Blacksburg Transit, which picks up everywhere in Blacksburg. |
