Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Virginia Tech has a large campus spread across 2,600 acres. In the middle of campus lies the Drillfield with buildings, dorms, and dining halls surrounding it. To walk from a class on one side of the campus to the other side usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Blacksburg Transit (BT) is the bus system that services Virginia Tech students and the residents of Blacksburg. Students show their student ID (Hokie Passport) in order to ride a bus; the fee is included in tuition. The Hokie Express BT route ferries Tech students around the Drillfield and to other parts of campus. Other BT routes go out to most of the apartment complexes off campus, as well as to the University Mall (location of the Math Emporium) and to the Wal-Mart in Christiansburg. Still, many students get used to walking around campus and downtown Blacksburg, or they choose bikes over riding the bus.

On the weekends, the BT is the most used way to get to parties, but bus service ends around 2 a.m. Students can also get around to parties using designated drivers provided by the fraternities, or by calling a cab. Hooptie Ride is a cab company specially designed for college students. For trips home or to other universities, Virginia Tech has the Home Ride service. This bus is only available for college students and picks riders up on campus in front of the library or Cassell Coliseum. This bus service takes students to Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Richmond, Tidewater, and Northern Virginia. Students at Tech rave about the BT, since it’s usually much easier to take the bus than to try parking on campus.

BUS/BIKE to and from Campus

Blacksburg transit is the best way to get to and from campus from the hours of 8 am-6 pm. They are fairly consistent with being on time, and depending on how many people are from your apt. area, will have small-huge busses available. I generally never have issues with riding the bus and it saves me a ton of money due to elevated gas prices. Of course, driving to campus is easier and more convenient but not worth paying $100+ for a parking pass and however much money for gas.

Pretty Good

The bus service is great; however, this only applies to when school is in session. During breaks the buses operate on reduced service which can be inconvenient for graduate students or students staying during the summer.

The Megabus operates in the next town about 10 miles away so you can get pretty much anywhere in the US and Canada without paying too much. There is also HomeRide VA which provides transportation to Northern Virginia and Richmond. This is very overpriced but also very convenient for students. The bus picks up on Friday afternoons from the Library and returns Sunday evening.

Roanoke airport is about 30 minutes from campus. This is one of the most expensive airports in the states, however.

Cab service outside of Blacksburg to nearby cities is limited but a service called HooptieRide provides late night/ weekend cab services for students attending bars/parties in Blacksburg. The prices are pretty fair.

Blacksburg Transit

BT is perfect, the cost is included in our tuition and is extremely convenient. It takes you to the nearest city on a pretty regular basis. There are also options through the school to pay a minimal fee to take students to the nearest airport for 10 dollars, or even four hours away to DC at a reasonable price.
