College Prowler Take

If you’re not familiar with the game of basketball, odds are, you will be once winter rolls around in Winston-Salem. Wake students live and die with the success of Demon Deacon basketball, and there isn’t a better show in town when Wake plays UNC or Duke. Expect the campus to empty out on nights of home basketball games, when students and fans pack the Lawrence Joel Arena, a large off-campus stadium a mile down the road that seats roughly 16,000.

Football plays second fiddle to the basketball team at Wake, but they still draw quality crowds numbering between 20–30 thousand at Groves Stadium, across the street from the Joel. The atmosphere isn’t quite as rowdy as what you’d expect, like at Tennessee or Michigan, but considering Wake’s size, the attendance is solid. Wake Forest typically fields competitive non-revenue sports. Soccer, in particular, is very big on campus, drawing decent crowds to Spry Stadium, a dedicated soccer facility. To sweeten the deal, the tickets to all sporting events are free, even basketball and football.

Varsity sports are successful....

Varsity sports are successful. Basketball is ranked in the nation, year in and year out. Women’s sports are continually ranked in the nation, as well. As for IM sports, Wake was ranked number two in the country for student involvement, behind Notre Dame.

The main sports that people on campus care about are football and men’s basketball. Those are huge, and people go crazy over them. Other than that, sad to say, most people don’t pay much attention.

Varsity sports are pretty big. Our football team isn’t the best, but the games are fun to go to. Of course, basketball is way too fun. ACC is the best. The baseball team is amazing. They are usually conference champs. Intramurals are really fun, and it’s easy to get on a team. I played basketball and softball this year.

IM sports are pretty popular. There are so many people who participate, and it is a lot of fun. They’re also a great way to meet people. They get pretty competitive sometimes. There are also club sports, which are a level between varsity and IM. They practice and are funded by the University. They even compete against other schools. However, the commitment level is not as high as varsity sports.

Intramural sports are huge. Almost everyone plays them, and all the Greek organizations sponsor teams. Plus, a lot of freshmen make teams with their hall.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Collins Basketball Courts - Outside of Collins Hall are three outdoor basketball courts, each of which is well lit at night. Beyond basketball, these courts are a popular venue for roller hockey.
  • Outdoor Tennis Courts - There are five outdoor tennis courts spread throughout campus, all of which feature stadium lighting.
  • Reynolds Gym - Within Reynolds Gym is an additional weight-training facility, which is generally used by the health and exercise classes that are housed in the same building. Upstairs are eight basketball courts, many of which can also be used for volleyball, as well as several smaller rooms used for things like karate.
  • The Miller Center - The Miller Center is a superb athletic facility. The weight room features a full compliment of both free weights and nautilus weight machines, and it is overflowing with aerobic equipment including treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical trainers. The cardio room looks out onto Ketner Field, which contains a regulation track that is available for students to use when not used for team practice. The Miller Center is also home to the basketball practice facilities, as well as many sport-specific training rooms upstairs.

Getting Tickets

For the majority of sports, tickets aren’t even required for students. You can simply show up immediately before the game and walk right in. However, basketball tickets are a different story entirely. For games against Duke or UNC, students camp out in order to get the best seats. There is a student organization called the Screamin’ Demons, that allows all members entry to any game, but it costs $15 to join. They say you must attend every home basketball and football game to hold your membership, but you’ll quickly find out they don’t actually keep attendance, so you can just show up for the games you care about. Plus, you get a black-and-yellow tie-dyed shirt out of it.

Most Popular Sports

Basketball is king here. Football games are also popular, but the team is usually not the powerhouse that is the basketball team. Soccer, baseball, and field hockey games tend to draw a decent following, as well.

Most Overlooked Teams

The baseball team, which is one of the nation’s best, doesn’t get enough credit. They don’t enjoy much of a home field advantage, due to the fact that many of their games occur while students are still in class.
