Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Dining at Wake Forest is pretty good. Although it is assumed that food at college is both terrible and bad for you, this is not the case at Wake. The Fresh Food Company (aka The Pit) offers a wide array of options from Mediterranean food (including hummus) to more traditional Southern fare. Vegetarians and those concerned with healthy options should not be worried, as there are healthy meatless options and a salad bar every day.

Reynolda Hall is also home to the Magnolia Room, which offers a refreshing departure from cafeteria-style dining. The "Mag Room" has real glasses and tablecloths, as well as the best sweet tea on campus. Other dining options include a full Starbucks located in the library and a Subway sandwich shop that is open late. However, the most unique option is Shorty's, a full-service restaurant. Shorty's offers a full menu of appetizers, soups, entrées, and even local beers on tap.

Probably the biggest complaint about dining is that you are forced to buy meal plans in large blocks, and some students find it hard to use all the meals. Nonetheless, dining at Wake Forest is solid all around, and the school is willing to listen to student feedback when making their dining decisions.

My Taste Buds Are Dying.

You will be sick of the 'pit' by the end of your first semester. It is the only dinning hall on campus and it is very repetitious and bland.

Get Meal Plan With Maximum Food Dollars

Food Dollars are key and a part of the meal plan. They can be used to buy Chick fil A, Starbucks, Subway, Campus Grounds(student run coffee shop), Moe's, the Sundry (drinks, food, snacks, and other over priced household items), Take Two Deli and Grill (Boar's Head), and Shorty's, our on campus restaurant. The other option is the Pit, our cafeteria. Some love it, some hate it. I am indifferent. The options are pretty good, but the food isn't always cooked to be it's best, except for the epic Thanksgiving dinner, when parents, prospective students, or large event are here, and when the Pit is having a special theme night. The Pit tries to change it up every now and then, some changes like are welcome, where as the weird changes to normal recipes are not. As a picky eater, I prefer the food dollar options, yet I always find myself pit-sitting for hours because the Pit, regardless of the food, is a great place to spend time with friends and procrastinate.

It's the Pit for a Reason

While the Pit is always coming up with new ways to reinvent themself, it often becomes repetitive. That being said, its got good options if you're vegetarian or vegan, and what it does best is southern down home cooking. The Benson food court is a great option to mix it up.

Did You Know?
  • Many local businesses in the University Parkway area deliver to campus. Papa John's Pizza, which accepts Deacon Dollars as a method of payment, is always a late-night favorite, delivering well past midnight, as are the many Chinese restaurants in the area.
  • No one at Wake ever buys silverware. Walk into the Benson Center, grab 50 plastic forks, and just walk out.
