College Prowler Take

The day you arrive at Wake freshman year, you’ll be directed to Information Systems to receive your brand new IBM Thinkpad. In one of the better decisions made by the administration, all new students receive identical laptops and printers to use for two years, which you then exchange for an upgraded model junior year. Not only do you get a sweet laptop with a ton of software packages from day one, the system provides for technology to be a major component both inside and outside of the classroom.

Since the network administrators have the luxury of a standard series of systems to work with, technology can be easily incorporated into the curriculum. You’ll often find yourself on the network while in class. Since laptop use is so prevalent on campus and network connections are essentially everywhere, there aren’t many computer labs on campus. However, there are a few labs in the library and academic departments equipped with tools more specific to a certain project, such as scanners. You’ll become close with your laptop at Wake. It may very well become your new best friend.

There is only one computer lab on campus, and it’s usually not crowded because everyone has their own computer. It’s nice to all have the same computer because if you have a problem, you can call Information Systems, and they will help you with the problems. Each dorm also has a RTA, or Resident Technical Advisor. They’re students who know about the computers and can help you with anything.
