College Prowler Take

The academic buildings at Wake Forest are, for the most part, excellent. Built into each seat in nearly all classrooms are Ethernet connections and power outlets. Like it or not, you’ll become very familiar with the inside of the eight-story Z. Smith Reynolds Library. This labyrinth-like facility houses more books and journals than you’ll ever need—that is if you can pick through the cryptic directions to find what you’re looking for. There are, of course, plenty of couches and padded chairs spread throughout the building to help you cram in comfort.

Wake’s athletic facilities are excellent. The athletic center features an impressive variety of weight and cardio machines, as well as free weights, for a relatively small school. The older Reynolds Gym houses several basketball courts, which are supplemented by a few outdoor courts scattered around campus. These courts may be more than enough at most comparably-sized schools, but at basketball crazed Wake Forest, you’ll often find that the courts are in high demand. A few more would be nice to shoulder the burden. Wake even has a nine-hole golf course on campus, contributing to the country-club-like feel of the campus.

The student center is more of a place for student organization offices, but it also has a dining area, a study area, and a movie theater. It’s not necessarily a hang-out place for students.

These are used fairly often in various situations ranging from student PowerPoint presentations to videos and large-scale text projections.

What To Do on Campus

After classes, students often hit the gym at the Miller Center, run the cross-country trails around campus, or stroll through Reynolda Gardens. No matter what they do, most students find ways to remain fairly active.

If fitness isn’t your thing, there are great places to hang out and eat with friends. The Pit, the Magnolia Room, and Starbucks are by far the most popular locations for this. In the evenings throughout the week, on-campus groups sponsor events like open-mic nights, plays, art exhibits, concerts, and comedy shows.

By far the most popular attractions are sporting events, with a massive student section called the Screamin’ Demons for football in the fall and for basketball in the spring. You’ll know there’s a game when the campus suddenly becomes dead silent and comes alive again when students come back to toilet paper the Quad after a victory.

Favorite Things To Do

Athletics and music are generally the most popular University-sponsored events. ACC basketball is certainly the king here, and students will camp outside the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum the night before games against rivals Duke and UNC. Wake also hosts a few major musical acts each year to play on campus, with bands like O.A.R., Third Eye Blind, Ben Folds, and the Dave Matthew’s Band having played in recent years. Tons of lesser-known local artists and student bands play weekly, so there’s always something to entertain you.
