College Prowler Take

The student body at Wake Forest is nearly 50 percent Greek, so the party scene revolves around fraternities like the earth around the sun. Everyone is either in one of the fraternities and sororities or knows several people who are. On weekends, and occasionally Wednesdays, there are three to six parties going on simultaneously on campus. At least one or two notable parties are off campus, as well. Fortunately for freshmen and independents, these parties are overwhelmingly open, so there isn’t too much trouble finding a place to go. Some parties are consistently dry, while others serve enough alcohol for the entire population of a small country. Of course, there are plenty in between.

Since there isn’t a frat row at Wake, and most frats have lounges in different dorms, the parties tend to be a little less out of control than they might otherwise be. This could be a good or bad thing, depending on your preference. Fraternity and sorority members typically live together in the halls directly above their respective lounges. Sororities typically host off-campus events during the week at clubs in Winston, such as Freddie B’s and Cobalt. Wake has a deferred rush process, which means students can’t rush until the second semester of their freshman year, which allows them to become better acquainted with the school before rushing into a poor decision that they might regret.

I think about half the students...

I think about half the students are Greek. Greek life definitely dominates the party scene on campus. All the good on-campus parties are at the fraternity lounges. Greek life does not rule the social world, though. It’s an extremely diverse social scene, and Greeks are only one of very many groups. In other words, Greek or not, you’ll fit in.

Greek life is awesome. I am in a sorority myself, and I would feel lost if I wasn’t involved. Frat parties are huge on Friday nights, and tons of people attend, often creating lines spilling into the street to get in the door.

At Wake Forest, Greek life seems like everything. Unless you’re going off campus on a weekend, the only thing to do is go to frat parties. There are no rivalries or anything between the sororities. They all have their stereotypes, though. One is all rich girls, and one is all party girls. You should definitely check it out, but if it’s not your thing, that’s not a problem. I know plenty of girls who are independent and are still into the social scene. It’s a little tougher with guys because the only thing to do on weekends is go to frat parties, and if you’re not in the frat, they won’t give you beer. They give it to the girls for obvious reasons. Six of my closest friends pledged the same fraternity, but I didn’t. I still had a good time being an independent, but I’m seriously considering joining in the fall.

The Greek life definitely dominates the social scene. The only parties are Greek parties. I am in a sorority and most of my friends are as well. Though, I do have independent friends. It’s weird, because at most other schools, it’s not really like this, and being Greek is more of an elitist thing. I’m not really what you’d call a ‘typical’ sorority girl, and no one ever thought I’d join, but it’s more low-key at Wake. Still, it’s a big deal, and most girls rush in the spring.

Greek life dominates the social scene. However, all fraternity parties are open to all students. Greeks live on campus in dorms, along with other students. Each fraternity or sorority has a block of rooms for their members. As for parties, there isn’t much else on the social scene besides frat parties. However, there are always other things happening on campus, such as plays, live music, and movies.
