College Prowler Take

After initially moving to Winston-Salem, many students are surprised to find how many diverse restaurants there are within a few miles of campus. Expect to find nearly every chain restaurant under the sun. They’re all here. You’ll never be hurting for selection, and you’ll find more value around town than you possibly could on campus.

One of the more popular hangouts in the general vicinity is La Carreta, a Mexican restaurant famous for its 32 ounce thirst-busters, available for the many beers on tap. And you can’t pass up its dirt cheap prices. When value like this is combined with all-you-can-eat tortilla chips and salsa, you’ve found nirvana in North Carolina. If you’re looking for all-you-can-eat wings, check out Lany’s or Putter’s, both very popular. For quality Italian food, check out Elizabeth’s, which is significantly cheaper than anything comparable on campus. When your parents come into town, beg, plead, or coerce them into taking you the Twin City Chophouse. You’ll find some of the best steaks money can buy, and they’ll prove it by maxing out their credit card. Finally, for quality eats after midnight, check out IHOP, which is always teeming with Wake Students. Stop by the drive-through at Cookout, where you can find the largest two dollar burgers you’ve ever seen, or try one of their famous shakes.

Restaurants are great off campus. We have one restaurant called Shorty’s on campus, but it’s a little small. Off campus, there’s just about everything you can think of. Outback, Fuddruckers, Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, and a ton more.

Off-campus restaurants are very nice. Winston-Salem is actually somewhat of a city, so there are downtown cafés, chain restaurants, and everything in between.

Winston-Salem has your normal chain places: Chili’s and the OIive Garden. There are also some great upscale restaurants, an excellent casual place called the Village Tavern, and a fast food place called Cookout—the only fast food I’ll eat more than once or twice a year.
