College Prowler Take
The day you arrive at Wake freshman year, you’ll be directed to Information Systems to receive your brand new IBM Thinkpad. In one of the better decisions made by the administration, all new students receive identical laptops to use for two years, until junior year when they exchange them for an upgraded model. Not only do you get a sweet laptop with a ton of software packages from day one, the system provides for technology to be a major component both inside and outside of the classroom. Since the network administrators have the luxury of a standard series of systems to work with, technology can be easily incorporated into the curriculum. You’ll often ?nd yourself on the network while in class. Since laptop use is so prevalent on campus and network connections are essentially everywhere, there aren’t many computer labs on campus. However, there are a few labs in the library and academic departments equipped with tools more speci?c to a certain project, such as scanners. You’ll become close with your laptop at Wake. It may very well become your new best friend.

We close off campus at 10 p.m., so you have to have a Wake Forest parking pass to get in or have someone call down for you. Also, all the doors to the suites and dorms are locked at all times, and the only way to get in is to have a Wake Forest key card. After 12 p.m., you can’t even get into any suite or dorm that isn’t your own unless someone lets you in. Honestly, I feel relatively safe, and the police on campus are really helpful. If you decide to come, I suggest that you take RAD; it’s a self-defense course for women, and it’s really fun! You get to know the police of?cers through RAD, and it makes me feel much more con?dent. |

Security’s just fine. You never really need to worry about anything. They have shuttles that run just about all the time, especially at night. I mean, campus isn’t huge, but if you don’t feel comfortable walking, you can call a shuttle, and it’ll pick you up. |

Security seems to be very good. I’ve never felt unsafe, and it’s a small campus, so that helps a lot. I’ve visited some large, impersonal colleges and just felt spooked at night. Wake is nothing like that. |

The campus is extremely closed off and secure. I’m not saying that things won’t happen because that is often possible. As long as you use your good sense, campus security does its best to keep our campus safe. |

I feel very safe at Wake Forest. As long as you use common sense, I’m sure you’ll be fine. I’ve never had a problem, and neither has anyone I know. Also at night, there is a campus shuttle bus called RIDE, which runs from dusk to dawn. It will take you anywhere you want or need to go, so you won’t ever have to walk alone. |
