Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While Warren Wilson athletics don’t tend to be comprised of the most competitive or bloodthirsty teams, our athletes are overwhelmingly happy with the athletic outlets here. New players are happily invited, and cooperation and team-building is emphasized. Several teams arrive early in the summer to train and bond, and they tend to remain a tight group of friends throughout the year. The mountain biking team has placed in the top three nationally seven times. Teams like crew come and go with interest, but the primary standards are soccer, basketball, swimming, biking, and cross country. Some sports, such as tennis, are offered as classes alongside physical education and fitness electives.

Intramurals are popular with students and provide an opportunity to be active and compete without the stress of mandatory away games or regular practices. Outdoor Programs also gets students outside and active in a less organized context.
Of course, plenty of students get their exercise walking or biking around campus and on the trails. Students here like to feel healthy and be outside, and it’s easy to find friends who want to go jogging, hiking, or swimming.

Not Too Competitive

Athletics are not really a big deal at Warren Wilson. Not many students go to games with any regularity. The teams aren't often competitive. If you're looking to go pro, this probably isn't the school for you. However, students on teams do tend to form close bonds and have a good time, which is what sports are supposed to be about.

A Lot of Heart

There is no football team, which may seem like a drawback to some. Athletics at Wilson are more about having fun and building camaraderie than actual competition. That being said, our mountain biking team consistently places well in collegiate national competitions.

This isn't an athletics-based...

This isn't an athletics-based school. We do offer a lot of different varsity sports, but they don't all have the same competitive atmosphere as larger state schools. Participating in basketball here helped shape my college experience, but it was another activity on top of everything else. I still had to go to school, participate in the work program, and do community service. There are also club sports and intramural opportunities.

Most Popular Sports

Basketball, cross country, and soccer.

Most Overlooked Teams

The mountain biking team works hard and wins awards, but since most of their events are a distance away from campus, spectators are few.

School Spirit

Wilson has changed a lot since its farm school days, and it is incredibly eye-opening to see the original boys come back for Homecoming. WWC students are advised to respect the history of this land and realize that it has been an influential place throughout all of its evolutions. Students who come to Wilson and stay recognize its flaws and difficulties, but have a deep love for what it attempts to accomplish.

Getting Tickets

You should have little trouble attending athletic events at WWC—all sporting events are free.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The river trail and Jones Mountain are favorites among students and community members, and the 25 miles of trails, meditation hut and garden, farmland, and forest offer countless opportunities for communing with nature.

Did You Know?

The Outdoor Programs crew takes groups of students on outdoor adventures. Paddling trips are popular, as well as snowboarding, snow skiing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Kayak roll practice takes place in the pool every Wednesday. Most trips are geared toward beginners, and once you have some experience under your belt, it is easy to find other students who are interested in more challenging trips.
