Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Warren Wilson is ever progressing in the fight to stay on top of the latest and greatest in computers. Bannerman, the main computer lab on campus, has nearly 30 computers that are available for student use and is open from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekends. The Computing Services Crew works in Bannerman Lab and is available to help students with computer problems or questions. We also have computers that are available for students in the academic buildings and the library. Most of the science labs have PCs in them, and we also have one Mac lab in the science building. Many students use the available computers for projects and papers all throughout the week.

Many students come to Warren Wilson with their own personal computer—laptop or desktop, Mac or PC—and do most of their projects and papers in their own rooms. All of the dorm rooms have Internet access via Ethernet cable or wireless, and some buildings on main campus also have wireless access. Some professors encourage students to view suggested Web sites online, read articles online, communicate via e-mail, and type up most things that are turned in—computer use is highly encouraged, but plenty of students don’t own a personal computer and don’t feel a need to procure one. The network on campus is currently in the process of being improved and updated, so there is some network downtime, but it is kept to a minimum. Generally the Internet is up and running and available for use whenever you might need to use it.

wireless in the basements of dorms is pretty good, but sometimes unreliable. Printing on campus is very easy with the library or the computer lab.

Computers Aren't Bad - Internet Is

Trying to get by without a laptop can be a pain. The only computer labs are on the far side of campus from most of the student housing. The internet connection can be a bit of a joke, especially late at night. Trying to stream videos is almost impossible, but general browsing is usually easy enough.

Somewhat Accessible, Printing Is Awful...

There are a few computer labs on campus, but none are open all night, which is hard for students without personal computers. Printers are also difficult to come by unless you catch the library before 10:30 at night; if you don't, the Jensen printer is pretty finicky, too. Personal computers are a good idea, along with your own printer-they save time and long walks.

There is a rarely used Mac lab in the biology department in Morse, a GIS lab in Jensen, and a “geek cave” in the basement of Dorland for gaming.
