The use of alcohol and marijuana is on par with other institutions, and it is not in any way encouraged or condoned by the administration. Although alcohol and marijuana are present, there is not really much use of hard drugs at WWC. All substances can be avoided with little effort. Wellness housing (which means no tobacco products or alcohol in or around the building) is available, and there are several student organizations centered on substance-free activities and living. Most students don’t find any pressure to do anything that they don’t want to do at Warren Wilson, and that includes drugs. Wilson students are often typified as weed-smoking hippies since we tend to embody aspects of the pot culture—the music, the hair, the nature-loving mindset—but this doesn’t always correlate to drug use. While we do tend to hold liberal ideas about drug law, we are supportive of those who chose not to partake, and no drugs, including alcohol, are necessary to have a positive experience at WWC.

The drugs are here, but the drug scene isn’t really over the top. It’s pretty subdued. |

I’d say drinking is much more popular than doing drugs. It’s not even getting drunk, but rather just having a couple of beers and relaxing before I have to do my work. |

As I’m hanging out with a lot of different groups and ages at Warren Wilson, I’m finding that a lot of upperclassmen don’t care about drugs as much as the freshmen. After a while, they just become happy with cheap beer. |

If you don’t do drugs, there is a good community, and it is not hard to still have fun. And if you do drugs, there are a lot of people who will do drugs with you. |
