Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For a college with a very small endowment and student population, we have overly sufficient resources. Ellison library has over 100,000 volumes with an equal number of e-books, as well as academic journal subscriptions and an extensive interlibrary loan system. All online resources are accessible through the network anywhere on campus. Devries Athletic Center has a pool, basketball courts, two soccer fields, two tennis courts, a weight room, cardiovascular equipment, and a structure for paddling equipment. Our 700 acres of forest has more than 25 miles of trails, including along the Swannanoa River. The cow fields, garden, and farm are beautiful and functional, and students are continually impressed by the stunning scenery all around them.

Gladfelter serves as the student union and houses the mail room, both Cowpie Café and the Gladfelter cafeteria, and the bookstore. There are several academic buildings, each with an individual atmosphere. The science wing has a view of the garden from a hallway that utilizes passive solar energy and is designed to look like an owl from the air. Two buildings on campus are LEED gold-certified. Orr Cottage boasts geothermal heating and air, recycled windows and doors, and was built by students using Wilson lumber. The EcoDorm houses a composting toilet, is surrounded by a permaculture garden, and has solar panels on its roof. All campus energy use is offset by wind and solar.

Quaint, Small Campus. Lacks a Good Student Center. Nice Library. Gym Has Limited Equipment.

Some buildings are very new, somewhat environmentally sustainable, & in good shape for the most part. However, some are very outdated, small and -- in some cases -- moldy. Athletic center is average but the equipment is limited. Library is beautiful and cozy, but lacks enough computers for the needs of students. The computer labs are very sterile and uncomfortable. Quality of dorm facilities varies drastically, and dorm life is very campy. Small facilities, all around, for a small campus and small student body. Campus lacks a building designated as a legitimate student center.

Facilities Are Decent

The facilities are all pretty decent. The gym, library, and computer labs have what one expects them to have, and everything is in workable condition. However, they are not always open. The student center, located in the same building as the dining areas, contains a ping pong table, sofas, and a vending machine. It's cozy.

Few Facilities, but No Extra Charge for Campus Resources

what there is is free to students, from kayaking trips to computer lab printing to laundry machines to climbing walls, but the campus is small, and the school is tuition funded, so most things are small.

Facts

Favorite Things To Do

Plenty of students like to hang out in the dorms and party any night of the week. Besides that, the best things to do are outside—exploring the trails, playing with baby cows, and swimming in the Swannanoa River or the pond. Bryson Gym offers a climbing wall and houses weekly salsa dancing, the largest weekly contra dance in the Southeast, two kinds of yoga, pilates, and circus practice. Sage Café has coffee, bagels, brick-oven pizza, and other goodies, and also frequently hosts music performances, spoken word and poetry competitions, and open mic nights. The Outdoor Program offers kayak roll practice weekly in the pool, and spiritual events include Emmaus, a Christian group, Quaker Meeting, Eastern Orthodox Gathering, a Buddhist group, and the Jewish Student Organization.

WWC students like play in the river, get down at Sage Café, attend a play at the school theater, bike up Jones Mountain, nap in the library, or go to yoga class.

Did You Know?

The Wellness Crew provides on-campus opportunities for learning and receiving holistic healing methods for absolutely no charge. The crew offers a range of activities, including yoga, pilates, ecstatic dance, salsa dancing, and tai chi, as well as body work, massages, and acupuncture, often using tinctures and salves grown and mixed by the Herb Crew.

Cold and flu season, as well as stressful exam weeks, prompts “community immunity” efforts focused on keeping your body and mind happy and healthy.
