Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Warren Wilson has no Greek life. The closest thing we have to fraternities and sororities are either the competitive work crews like farm crew, landscaping, and natural resources crew, or the Bubbas. The Bubbas get together twice a semester and throw a keg party in the dogwood field. They make an enormous bonfire and invite all the students and staff. Recently there has been some tension between the administration and the Bubba events, and new regulations have been put in place. Now you have to show your ID to get beer, and you have to check in when you come. These new rules are kind of a drag to many, and it has affected the number of students that come. The Bubbas are mostly upperclassmen males who work on the farm or NRC crew. They pretty much all live in Schafer. The students all agree that they do not want Greek life on campus. If you are concerned with that kind of thing, you probably shouldn’t even consider coming to Warren Wilson. The College itself is a kind of fraternity, because it is so small and because everyone pretty much knows everyone. There are specific social cliques, and the work crews really do become social groups at times. Also, the different dorms kind of work as fraternity or sorority houses. There are no initiations, but you will feel out of place if you end up in one that doesn’t fit.

Wilson has no Greek life and no...

Wilson has no Greek life and no exclusive clubs or teams. In this way, Wilson lacks the social hierarchy we all experienced in high school. Wilson is about community and acceptance. The closest thing we have to a Greek culture is our work program. All students are employed on campus on one of more than 110 work crews. Sometimes the crews partake in friendly competition.

Warren Wilson is great in that we...

Warren Wilson is great in that we have no Greek life whatsoever. As a result, we don't have a huge schism between frat/sorority people and non-Greek life folk. That doesn't mean we don't know how to have a great time on a Friday night. Swing by the Eco-Dorm, and you may find an old-style jam session going on, complete with fiddles, banjos, guitars, and sometimes even a nickleharpa (a Swedish, keyed violin). Saturday you may find a birthday potluck, or a movie night over in Village B. Socially, we're pretty diverse here at Warren Wilson.
