Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Glad: Gladfelter’s cafeteria, also known as Sadfelter or Madfelter on a busy day, or Radfelter on a delicious day.
  • Lesbian lingerie: Plaid flannel.
  • ODL: Outdoor Leadership
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • All Warren Wilson students are interested in music. Don’t change your tastes before you come because most WWC students like just about everything—just be prepared to defend yourself, and be open to new sounds.
  • Warren Wilson students are not all crunchy granola hippies. You will not be lynched for driving an SUV or eating ham sandwiches with mayo. WWC students do things differently than much of popular culture, but they respect all choices.
Tips to Succeed
  • Come open-minded to everything, even Republicans.
  • Don’t forget to leave campus! Sometimes students love this place a little too much, and it can get overwhelming if you don’t get perspective every now and again.
  • Don’t get down if you don’t make it onto the work crew you wanted. Every job here can be fun and educational if you bring a positive attitude. If you think it’s going to suck, it definitely will.
  • Drink water!
  • Forget all of the stereotypes you’ve heard about Wilson students and get to know the students as individuals.
  • Get involved. It makes you part of the community, and you’ll learn to love being busy.
  • Make use of office hours and get to know your professors. You’ll learn more, do better, and care more.
  • This is a work college. Go to class. Go to work.
  • Try out a couple of service projects, find one you love, and stick with it.

What They Tell You Isn't True.

I am not cynical. This is really what the guides don't tell you:

-The academics here aren't challenging, and kids aren't motivated to do much other than smoke pot or make hemp necklaces.

-Many people don't shower, so bring your gas mask.

-If you aren't the most environmentally conscious person ever, people here will look down on you--hippies are just as pretentious as WASPs.

-The music and theater programs here are lackluster.

-Fun activities are few and far between.

The Work Program Works

Having to work for the college may seem sketchy, but the various crews provided easy entrance to otherwise difficult carreers to get into.

You leave with valid work experience and references in most general the areas of work (plumbing, electric, construction, farm, mechanic, lab, office, medical, computer, culinary, etc.)

Facts

Traditions
  • Mayhem: An annual campus-wide festival held each spring, Mayhem is the blanket term for the work day parade, the circus, and the live music freak show following the circus. Mayhem features student-made floats, student variety acts and performances, and lots of music.
  • Service Day: Service day is part of both fall and spring orientation for freshmen and transfer students. All new students, returning student leaders, and selected faculty and staff trek to somewhere in the outer community to serve and bond.
  • Work Day: Work day is Warren Wilson’s annual rite of spring, in which class and work are cancelled for an afternoon and the community comes together to work on jobs around campus. After cleaning up the river, mulching some trails, building fences or structures, or anything that needs to be done, there is a picnic with music and dancing in the pavilion.
Urban Legends
  • It's said that Gladfelter may have burned down at one point.
  • Sunderland is rumored to have once been a slaughterhouse.
  • There are rumors of suicides in Vining.
