Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Asheville and its surrounding area have a little something for everyone. If you want to enjoy the great outdoors, there are rivers to be paddled, trails to be hiked, rock faces to be climbed, and beautiful drives to be taken on the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you’re feeling artsy, you can catch an indie film at the Fine Arts Theatre before heading to a gallery opening at any of the awesome galleries both downtown and in the River District. There are a plethora of great places to eat, ranging from El Salvadorian food at The Pupuseria to daily-changing, local-ingredient-based cuisine at Table. And if you want dessert, the Sisters McMullen Cupcake Corner and the French Broad Chocolate lounge are two of many places to check out to satisfy a sweet tooth.

The music scene is also pretty awesome. With venues like the Grey Eagle and the Orange Peel hosting bands like Dr. Dog, Rilo Kiley, Michael Franti, G Love and Special Sauce, Ani DiFranco, The Faint, Dinosaur Jr, and tons of others, there’s a chance for everyone to see a band they like. Bars in the area also host local bands most Friday and Saturday nights. Speaking of bars, there are a lot of them in the greater Asheville area. Downtown is chock full of them, Barley’s, The Thirsty Monk, and Jack of the Wood just to name a few. There’s also Pisgah Brewery in Black Mountain, and well as the Watershed and the Town Pump. There are at least five local breweries, and most bars and restaurants serve local beer.

Mountain Campus

Warren Wilson College is located in the heart of the Appalachians. There are peaks and farmland in every direction you look. Asheville, a popular city with plenty of restaurants and attractions, is just 20 minutes down the road, and the quaint town of Black Mountain is in the other direction. Unless you really enjoy the outdoors, there is not much to do, but it's perfect for a country-lover.

Asheville

Asheville is the Burlington vt of the south. It has a tea house, drum circles, great restaurants and a lot of really awesome people that will distract you from the Warren Wilson bubble.

The Atmosphere Is Liberal and Hippie

Despite Asheville being smack in the middle of the rural south, it is a fun city with lots of cool cafes and coffee shops. The people in the city are basically grown-up versions of WWC students; people who like the outdoors, and who aren't confined by society's rules of personal hygiene will love it here.

• Warren Wilson students tend to reflect Asheville’s interest in local, sustainable, and cruelty-free food: vegetarian/vegan restaurants, food co-ops, and eco-friendly potlucks abound.
