Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Wilson students certainly know how to get down. Dance and theme parties are popular, and you are likely to know almost everyone in the room. Most people enjoy staying on campus on the weekends, although house parties and trips to Asheville can be fun as well. You’re most likely to find people laughing with friends and listening to music in their rooms or the common area of their dorms. Weekend nights are the best time for floating—wandering campus, visiting friends, hanging out in Sage Circle, and maybe strolling down to the hay barn to leap around.

There is something interesting happening on campus every day of the week, the majority of which can be fully enjoyed substance-free. Music, poetry, open mics, visiting speakers, workshops, and events make deciding which fun thing to go to each night a difficult task. Off-campus, the Orange Peel and the Grey Eagle are popular venues to go see shows if you have some spare cash. Bars aren’t as popular, as it’s usually cheaper and more fun to stay home, but Pisgah and the Root Bar are attractive for their more unique offerings.

Nightlife Is Nonexistent

Unless you have a car, there isn't much to do on campus. The students try and organize events and activities to take part in but most students would rather be partying and so you'll find the events to be rather lackluster with few attendants.

Things Can Get Slow

Nightlife is pretty sub-par. Parties only happen on weekends, and even then they're normally pretty boring. Once in a while there are really good parties, but most of the time it's just bands and dancing. A lot of drug use happens on campus so you won't have problems getting inebriated. If you are 21, go into Asheville for a good time. There are also some clubs you can get into if you're 18.

Asheville Is Great...

Asheville and Black Mountain are great cities; there is always something to do. However, public transportation is unreliable, and getting to Black Mountain requires multiple bus changes. Most people don't have cars, which is an issue. However, there are wonderful vegetarian/ vegan options and lots of cool shops.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

The Orange Peel and The Grey Eagle offer music that rarely has an age requirement, as well as events such as contra dancing and Found exhibits. Coffee shops abound, including the anarchist homeless-friendly Firestorm Café, the mildly pretentious hipster but outstanding Izzy’s, the classic Dripolator, and the peaceful and serene Buddha Bagels. A drum circle gathers every Friday night in Pritchard Park, and the locals are always glad to hang out and chat.
