Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Despite its size, W&J is home to a decent variety of men’s and women’s sports. If there’s a sport or competition you’re interested in, odds are you’ll find it here. Whether or not you get involved and join a team, it’s fun to just go watch some events and learn about sports you’ve never thought of before. If mainstream sports don’t suit you, you can catch a rugby game, or cheer on the water polo team, or even observe the occasional equestrian competition. With the immense popularity of varsity and intramural sports alike, along with the constantly busy Wellness Center, it isn’t hard to see how W&J made Men’s Fitness magazine’s number 14 spot among America’s most fit colleges. While the College is most known for its strong academic reputation, the students have recently put it on the map for fitness. We are certainly an active campus, full of students more ready to jump into a sport than to sit by and watch. If you’re looking to be tested on the field, then you’ll have plenty of opportunities. The most significant exception to that comes with the football team. Put simply, it is huge. Unless you happen to be an outstanding player, get comfortable standing on the sidelines, because the bench is overflowing.

Great Teams, No School Spirit

The athletic teams at W&J are outstanding and typically do very well in the PAC. However, the students (except the cheerleaders) don't care about cheering on the teams at sporting events, which is embarrassing when another school (like Waynesburg) brings more fans to W&J. Students are more likely to follow professional or Division I teams than W&J's teams. The facilities are all very nice. Students seem to really enjoy intramural sports.

Sports Aren't Everything

At W&J, the student body knows about sports events, and a lot of people go, but it's not like you HAVE to go. The football stadium is pretty packed usually and students of course get in free, but I'm not a big football fan so I don't usually go. When I have gone to games, they've been fun to watch but I don't feel overwhelmed by the sports scene on campus.

Most Popular Sports

Football, basketball, and water polo tend to draw the biggest crowds, or at least the most enthusiastic ones. Football games can get crowded, especially later in the season as our team almost inevitably makes it to playoffs.

Most Overlooked Teams

W&J is sports-crazy at times, so most teams get their fair share of attention. The major exceptions would probably be tennis and our swimming and diving team. Intramural teams can be some of the most fun to watch, but they usually don’t get as many spectators as they should.

School Spirit

W&J’s school spirit is more a “student spirit” because very few people seem to care about the College itself. W&J students pick something they’re proud of, be it the professors or the athletics, and spend their energies supporting that facet rather than the College as a whole. The students who are genuinely proud of W&J are not very expressive about it.

Getting Tickets

Admission to athletic events is free for students, and you don’t usually need tickets (with the exception of some tournament and playoff games).

Best Place to Take a Walk

The track at Cameron Stadium, when available, can be a quick and comfortable walk. Wandering around Washington Park on a good day can be both more enjoyable with its scenery, and more of a workout because its built on a series of hills.
