Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Boy, oh boy. Nothing around W&J gets more complaints than the campus food, except maybe the meal plan. That being said, the food here should be taken in stride. Sure, it isn’t five-star dining, but it isn’t slop either. The head chef does a good job of bringing in new dishes every so often as specials, and the cooking staff do pay some attention to the comment cards submitted by students. It is understandable that students get bored of the food, given that it is run by Parkhurst Dining Services, owned by the Eat ‘n Park restaurant chain, which uses only those ingredients approved by the corporate heads. Needless to say, one day’s hamburger and turkey casserole can look suspiciously like the previous day’s meatloaf, and the soup rotations can be predicted with a rudimentary knowledge of statistics.

George and Tom’s, more commonly referred to as “Meal Exchange,” takes the heaviest complaints, and rightly so. While it is supposed to be a quick and easy option for students with busy schedules, it typically fails at that—and hard. The recent inclusion of custom-made deli wraps is probably the healthiest option on campus, but nearly everything else they offer is some combination of battered, fried, or just plain greasy frozen food. With no competition on campus, Parkhurst has a strangle-hold on most of our dietary lives. Until another option is brought on campus, or until local eateries accept our meal plans at their off-campus locations, the complaints will continue.

Decent

The food here gets a little old after four years, but there are always those favorites that I look forward to in the Commons. Meal plans are reasonable and there is always dozens of choices -- it's just a matter of what you like. The staff, for the most part, is very kind and respectful and overall it's a good experience.

Good but Gets Repetitive

There are really only two places to eat on campus: the main dining hall and a quick place called G&Ts. The dining hall staff are all very nice and personable. They learn a lot of the students names! The food is good but it gets old fast. The main dining hall has a lot to choose from such as sandwiches, pizza and pasta, the main line, the grill, a soup/salad bar, desserts, and a special bar that changes daily. They listen to the students and have Student Choice Meals monthly where the meals that got the highest votes are served. G&T's is really just greasy fast food but they have made healthier options such as a create your old salad option.

The Parcell Room connected to the Commons features a number of paintings by alumnus Malcolm Parcell and used to be reserved for faculty and special events until it was opened for general use in 2005. Truth be told, some of the paintings are a little on the disturbing side and certainly aren’t the type of art traditionally associated with comfortable dining.
