College Prowler Take

W&J might just as well have been the result of an intersection of a dozen different points in time plopped conveniently on a 60-odd acre plot. The newer buildings like the Tech Center and Burnett are on the cutting edge (or at least just slightly behind) of academic technology and they show it. Some of the older buildings like McIlvaine and Lazear feel like antebellum relics whose last legs have long since given out. Old Main at least feels appropriately historic, and its “way behind the times” feel has a certain loveable charm about it. The new dorms look great, while the Row is still just an awkward line of fallout shelters. The renovation of the old ITS building into the new student center, the Hub, was a huge improvement in student life. The College also refurnished the common rooms of the dorms to fit them with more chairs, couches, work tables, and either a pool table or a half-size air hockey table. The library is perhaps the best facility available in terms of aesthetics, comfort, usefulness, and available technology. The Wellness Center has better-than-average equipment, but could use more space. The not-so-soundproof practice rooms in Olin could use some work as well. Unless you live in Mellon or Upperclass, there’s really not much of a reason to have serious complaints about where you live. Overall, much of the campus could use some updating, as well as a little TLC from the students.

The student theater group puts on productions every semester ranging from classic and modern interpretations of Shakespeare, musicals, comedy revues, and modern drama. They also produce plays written by students and faculty themselves every December for the annual Winter Tales production. The Fine Arts Series at the Olin Fine Arts Center brings in different musical performers (generally classical or classically-influenced) and various stage acts. Did You Know?

Plans are in the works for a multi-million dollar new science building to better facilitate the biology and chemistry departments currently operating in Dieter-Porter Hall.

The building that houses the new student center, the Hub, was the original student center a few decades back. It was overtaken by the offices of Internet Technology Services (ITS) and Student Health until student government president Wes Canon pushed to return it to its original purpose in 2006.
