Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Perspectives on Greek life can be radically different between insiders and outsiders. For some initiated brothers and sisters, Greek life can shape their whole college experience by providing a stable community and developing friendships that will carry on beyond graduation. For students who choose to stay independent, though, Greek life is just another group of organizations that throw parties and occasionally butt heads. But regardless of your personal feelings on the issue, with nearly half of the campus affiliated with a fraternity or sorority, you’ll be inundated with Greek letters, cheers, rumors, and pledges. For better or worse, the Greek system is permanently tied to the College and seems to keep getting stronger, even if the administration doesn’t seem too keen on it. Sure, you’ll find that each house generally has some stereotype attached to it. Some students see it as like minds joining together, others see it as low-level brainwashing, while still others see it as unnecessary cliques on an already too-small campus. When you’re on the inside, some political maneuverings are usually necessary to keep things from boiling over with the administration. When you stay independent, you’re still part of the College community, and you don’t have to worry about chapter dues or service hours or any other obligation that your Greek friends have to bear. Ultimately, Greek life is just like everything else around here: it is what you make of it. Just be sure to give it a fair chance first.

Not for Everyone

Those who are involved in greek life seem to have mixed feelings. Some love it, others hate all of the obligations, but love the bonds they have made. A lot of students are in a greek organization, but they do not exclude those who are not. Most people have at least one friend in each fraternity and sorority. I do think that the greek organizations should do more fun events on campus, like Delta Gamma's Anchor Splash, which is a guaranteed blast to watch.

Did You Know?

The Phi Gamma Delta fraternity (better known as the FIJIs) holds one of the biggest parties of the year, FIJI Island, which is held annually near the end of spring semester. Before they relocated to their new house in 2006, the FIJIs traditionally constructed a wall between their old house and the neighboring dorm, Upperclass Hall, to make a courtyard outside of their party room. FIJI Island traditionally has one of the largest turnouts of any Greek event throughout the year.
