Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Getting a read on the dating scene at W&J is tricky. There is no doubt that living with 1,500 people allows for gossip to travel as quickly as the VDs and breakups they concern. Diving into the dating pool too many times can quickly poison you here, and you shouldn’t hold out much hope of privacy or secrecy. At a place like W&J, your business becomes everyone else’s business as quickly as it takes to fire off an IM or a text message. This isn’t to say that there is no chance of a lasting relationship, but with so limited a selection, the odds are stacked pretty high against you. Complaints abound about the guys being egotistical or just plain immature. Likewise, guys levy grievances about the women being spoiled and duplicitous (if not necessarily in such proper words). Unfortunately, this quibbling overshadows the genuine ladies and gentlemen of the campus who sit politely by, extending every courtesy and exhibiting every grace, refined and sophisticated without an air of pretension and passionate in their romantic endeavors. Yes, all three or four of them are sadly obscured by the constant drama reminiscent of those painful high school days of rumors and vicious gossip. They are there, but you’ll have to dig—dig deep. At the risk of sounding cynical, maybe the guys and girls here can be better described by something Fat Albert once said: they’re like school in summertime—no class.

Girls Are Hott

Most ladies are hott and/or attractive. This being said many have boyfriends. There are a variety of different female cliques to suit your fancy and interests. There are few campus sleazes that prowl around waiting for their next conquest, but for the most part girls here neither reserved nor sleazy.

People Are Cool

The majority of people here seem to have a preppy type look, but everyone seems accepting unlike high school.

Guys Are Ok

It depends on what you are looking for. All the good guys have girlfriends and the rest are mediocre.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The most accurate qualifier would be repetitive. The Greek organizations dominate the broader social scene because they are the only ones to ever reserve the on-campus party room under the Wellness Center (in its appropriately ironic location) or have houses to themselves to throw parties. Parties that start up in non-Greek residence buildings tend to get shut down quick by RAs, so those become increasingly rarer throughout the year. No matter where you go, the music will almost assuredly be the same revolving playlist of hip-hop's top 40 or MTV-hyped alt-rock bands. For the most part, if you want something to happen, you have to take matters into your own hands.

Hookups or Relationships?

With the majority of students coming from only an hour or so away, most people seem to be in existing relationships when they come in as freshmen. Their squeeze may or may not attend W&J. Those that aren't already committed usually pair up by fall midterms. Hookups are a dangerous proposition for many because the student population is so small; you are bound to run into them on a near-daily basis either in class or out. If there was ever any awkwardness, it'll be magnified over and over again. Of course, a small population also makes it easy to get to know that particular someone, and chances are you will have some club or class in common with him or her.

Dress Code

For some inexplicable reason, one of the biggest trends is to wear college apparel from other colleges. Pitt gear is the most popular, as well as Ivy League wear. Anything having to do with W&J athletics dominate some people's wardrobes, and it shows. Shirts printed specifically for Greek events are extremely popular, as if people aren't already aware of whether or not you belong to a fraternity or sorority. For guys, the rule tends to go towards either the athletic or the casual. For the girls, the rule tends to go to two extreme ends: the extreme casual, or the refined and trendy. It isn't uncommon to see most of the female population wearing pajama bottoms and hoodies all day, nor is it rare to find them with designer lines and patent leather high-heels.
