Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The long and short of it is that the campus is about as safe as you can reasonably expect from a place that isn’t walled and gated. You’re much more likely to have problems with a drunken fellow student bothering you than you are to get into a conflict with anyone from the city. Campus security guards are constantly on patrol somewhere on campus, blue-light phones are never far off, and you’re always only about five minutes from the security office any time you’re on college property. Despite its borderline-urban setting, the college often feels more like it sits in the hinterlands of Amish country. Washington proper is a different story. For the most part, no one is particularly fond of walking around the city after dusk, especially in the blocks behind Chestnut Street and East Maiden Street on the opposite end of campus. Both parts of town have a bad reputation for being generally shady areas full of unsavory characters. Thankfully, these are mostly residential blocks, and the bars and the VIP club on Main Street are only two blocks from campus and outside of any really questionable parts of town. Regardless, it’s always a better idea to not go it alone if you can help it. For an additional measure of safety, campus security will gladly escort you to where you’re heading in town if you request them. They have your back like that.

Totally Safe

Very safe. I have never felt uncomfortable on campus, and have even walked places by myself at 3 a.m. -- not that I'm advocating doing so, but I do feel comfortable and safe enough to do so. Security is serious about their work and are willing to walk with us at any time of day or night if we request.

Saftey

I feel safe walking around on campus, but still would never leave by myself at night or want to walk home alone. The college itself is pretty safe, but people from around town sometimes come in and I have heard of incidents where students have gotten into trouble with them. People frequently steal from cars and in the parking lots.
