Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Frats are the best place to go for nightlife. The parties are fun, you know everyone there, and the alcohol is free. The fraternities are also beneficial for people who are not 21 yet. They can get in, have fun, and not have to worry about being checked for an ID. For those who are 21, the clubs in the area, like VIP, are always popular to go to, and while the alcohol is not free, it is pretty cheap.

There is always the chance of sneaking into the bars around campus, but unless you have a fake ID, you probably won’t have much luck. Some bars around the area will have a college night, though, where they give a free pitcher of beer to any person who brings a friend who is under 21. While the bars are popular on the weekends, Wednesday is by far the most popular night to go. They are all packed with college students every Wednesday night, and some also offer some drink specials for this important night every week. Although most people stay close to campus, there is also always the option of going into Pittsburgh to find one of the college bars around Pitt and CMU just for a change of pace.

Some Options

You have a few options for nightlife at W&J. If you don't want to drink, you can hang out at Monticello's, head into Pittsburgh, go see a movie at a local theater, etc. For those who want to drink, you can go to the fraternities, go to a bar in town, drink in your room with friends, go into Pittsburgh, or a combination of any of these options. The fraternities are generally laid-back and welcoming and some of the themed parties can be a lot of fun. Parties used to be more fun back when the Greeks were in the Quads and fraternities could have large "registered parties" in their very own party rooms. Those were the good ol' days.

Organization Parties

Fraternities are the only groups that throw parties, and usually most of the school attends the bigger parties. There are annual ones like ATO's Cinqo de Mustache, held on May 5, where the entire fraternity grows a mustache for the occasion. There are also the extremely popular Halloween parties that are held at every fraternity.

Did You Know? Although no one knows why, Girls Gone Wild recently came to VIP to look for girls to be in their next season.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

VIP Night Club

The VIP is the only true nightclub in Washington, and thankfully, it sits on Main Street only a few blocks from the edge of campus. The DJs usually spin a blend of hip-hop and dance. The dance floor has a few risers if you’re looking to stand out from the crowd. The bar is well stocked with almost anything you’ll need to get the rhythm moving through you and draw you out to the floor. While not a particularly outstanding club, the VIP holds its own as a much needed addition to Washington’s nightlife.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Tuscan Tavern

It tends to have some of the better beers available in Washington. The bar is usually lined with locals, and so is not as popular with the students but still fun to go to.

South Side Restaurant

The South Side Restaurant is not really a student favorite. They do have better specials than a normal bar though.

Ernie’s Freestyle Restaurant

Better known as simply "Freestyle's," this bar is known mostly for being one of the best outfitted bars in town. With a big TV for watching games, darts, a pool table, and some decent wings, Freestyle's has earned itself a loyal following. The bartenders that work the night shifts are usually friendly and knowledgeable, and you won't normally be hard-pressed to find a seat. The most distinct characteristic might just be the music; they'll play Slayer right next to Journey and then some Creedence before moving on to something equally non sequitur. If you don't mind a random and constantly shifting music selection, Freestyle's is a suitable place to hang.

Some nights they have a college night, where people over 21 can bring their younger friends to the dance club section of the club.

Monticello's Coffee House

On Friday and Saturday nights from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m., Monticello's, a student-run milkshake bar in the basement of the Hub, opens up and serves pretzels, pizza, and snack foods. They have games and once a month have a karaoke night.
