College Prowler Take

The Union Grill, or “D-U,” as the savviest students prefer to call it, is the biggest saving grace for anyone tired of campus dining. The best parts: reasonable prices, good selection, versatility (it’s just as good for a date or a dinner with your parents as it is to grab a sandwich with your friends), and the occasional spotting of a professor holding court in the booths by the bar. Located underneath the George Washington Hotel, the D-U has real character and a definite speakeasy kind of charm. If that’s not exactly your kind of place, then you’ll always have standard bonhomie of the familiar chain restaurants that abound in Trinity Point and Strabane Square just off campus. Unfortunately, Washington comes up short on its variety of restaurants, and as a result, the dining scene can become just as dull as the campus food. That is, of course, unless you have a boundless love for pizza and Italian food. For most, those will only go so far, and thereafter, the city of Pittsburgh becomes the nearest haven for good eats. Having to drive 30 or 40 minutes to get there, though, becomes a deterrent just as quickly. For sushi or general Japanese cuisine, heading north on Route 19 is your only option. Be sure to check out Little Tokyo in Mt. Lebanon and Benichopsticks in McMurray. Also check out the strip of eateries in the Southside in Pittsburgh. All things considered, you can find just about anything you’re hungry for, but you might have to drive a good while to find it.

If you’re willing to drive, downtown Pittsburgh and the South Side have the best eats by far. I recommend the Cheesecake Factory for desserts.

Fortunately, there are a fair number of good restaurants that are accessible. The best one within walking distance is, without question, the Union Grill. Their pasta dishes are incredible, and they have some decent beers on tap.

Washington is hurting for some good restaurants to move in. You’re better off driving the 30 minutes to Pittsburgh if you’re really looking for a good meal.

A little ways up Route 19, Benichopsticks is a nice Japanese restaurant that also serves Chinese and American favorites. The sushi is great there as well.

Old Mexico is the best Mexican restaurant in the area, with great service and mariachi bands at different times during the month. Their hours are weird, so you might want to check on them first.
