Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s difficult to convince Residence Life to grant you permission to move off campus. It’s also a pain to walk the extra distance to class, you’ll be farther away from most of your friends (not to mention the party scene), and you’ll have to answer to the Washington Police instead of campus security, but you might save a little money. All of these assessments are surely brought up time and again, but that still doesn’t stop a handful of students from finding their own place. Odds are you’ll end up living in one of the houses along North Avenue, most of which run fairly close to the new Greek houses on Chestnut Street, so you usually won’t be too far removed from everyone else. Finding your own place or moving in with someone you know can offer more space, more comfort, and more peace and quiet, which is a huge draw for some. Unfortunately, many of the places available are not that much better than the dorms. The newer buildings that the College has constructed have incorporated full kitchens and bigger common spaces to help satisfy students’ desires, but a fair number still want the feeling of being off on their own in more of a “real-world” living situation. The good news is that most of the off-campus students are seniors, so places open up every year. For freshmen who are not commuters, don’t plan on living off campus—it just doesn’t happen here. If you want to try, I wish you luck with the paperwork. Happy hunting.

You can't live off campus unless you are a commuter, but there really is no need to.
