Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Washington & Lee boasts a fine array of dining options that will surely satisfy even the most demanding foodie. At the core of meal possibilities lies the Marketplace, known almost exclusively as the "D-Hall." Used mostly by first-years, the Marketplace also serves residential advisers, students not affiliated with Greek organizations, and any other community members willing to pay the somewhat steep price for a meal. With its ever-present healthy or heart options, salad bar, Panini grill, and soup options, the Marketplace represents a solid core for W&L dining options. For perhaps a little more quality and choice, there is Café '77 located in the University Commons directly above the Marketplace. With a wide array of sandwiches, salads, and snack items in its inventory, the Co-op (as it is known around campus) serves those students looking for a convenient on-the-hill snack or a late-night repast. Some student favorites here include the sunrise sandwiches and the pizza sticks. Finally, W&L's most recent dining addition, the Hillel House, caters to the kosher and vegetarian audience. Fielding a more eclectic array of dining options, this small café offers many locally produced ingredients in its sandwiches and salads, as well as outstanding smoothies. With these three dining options, a hungry General can surely satisfy even the most eccentric craving.

Meal plans, like many other aspects of W&L life, depend greatly on a student's Greek affiliation. All first-years have a dining plan that guarantees an essentially unlimited number of meal swipes in the Marketplace. For the majority of students who join a Greek organization, they can choose between Greek food or a “flex plan” that affords some on-campus dining. Those upperclassmen who choose off-campus living situations are not required to sign up for any meal plans whatsoever.

Relatively Good

The quality of the food is better than some other university's that I've had, but there are not a lot of options or variety. D-hall is open until 7pm and freshmen meal plans give you all-you-can-eat kind of access. The coop is open until midnights on "school nights," so there's always food to be had for late-night study sessions. The newly-built Hillel House gives an extra lunch option, but small operational hour windows.

D-Hall

D-Hall Freshman year isn't that bad. It gets a little old after awhile but it's consistently pretty good food. Co-op also has delicious food and offers a place to take a nice study break. Generally most people don't buy the D-Hall meal plan after Freshman year because they're either on the Greek meal plan or have houses with actual kitchens that offer more variety but everyone agrees that they miss the frozen yogurt machine!

Convenient and Friendly

The people who work there are great and the food is fine. It's like any other cafeteria and so people often complain but also miss it when it's gone. In terms of outside the shall there are very limited eating options but since campus is so small it's fine. The food quality is great in the coop
