Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Lexington falls under the jurisdiction of three police forces: the Lexington Police department, the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s department, and the Virginia State Police. Police are serious about the speed limit, litter, noise, and public drunkenness and have no qualms about writing up students for any type of violation. Students who overstay their two-hour (or 15-minute) welcome in downtown parking spots are likely to be ticketed or have their cars towed. The good news is that W&L security guards tend to look the other way if students park at the curb and leave their blinkers on for a while.

If students are caught with alcohol in the dorms, they could be given a “strike”—three strikes within one year equals expulsion. Of course, the University in many ways has had a lenient attitude towards students. Smoking was allowed in freshman dorm rooms until the fall of 2004, and underage drinking went on all the time at fraternities, which are University property. But that laxness may be changing. Smoking is now prohibited in all undergraduate residence halls, and administrators made clear that they would get serious about enforcing the official regulations against underage drinking, effective immediately. The University has also begun cracking down on fraternities for any type of violation. Some students feel that it is becoming clear that the University is attempting to get rid of the prominent Greek life that Washington and Lee is known for.

Pretty Helpful

Most of the campus security officers are only concerned with keeping students safe and out of trouble with the police. The LexPo are always really strict the first few weeks of the school year, but then really only show up to shut down the parties when noise permits are up. The administration seems accepts underage drinking as a reality of any college (Presdent Ruscio is on the Amethyst Initiative to drop the drinking age to 18)and put their efforts into teaching students how to drink responsibly. The school pays for Traveller to ensure that students don't drink and drive, and, as such, drunk driving rarely happens. The Campus Health Center is also open 24 hours and has a "safe haven" policy for students who go because they are sick from drinking or passed out. They will send you to the hospital if they deem it necessary.

LexPo is Crazy

LexPo is crazy, but if you're smart then you should be fine. Always walk with a group of 5 or more, never carry ANYTHING and just don't be stupid. Follow those general rules and you should mostly stay out of trouble. Campus security is a lot more chill than LexPo and they're generally there to help you.

Lexpo

The Lexington Police force seem to have it out for students. Especially in the past year the not so affectionately named LexPo regularly patrol the greater Lexington area breaking up parties by midnight. They go through spurts charging students with MIP's and what have you. Campus security regularly comes through the fraternity and sorority houses. As long as you are not drinking in the hallways during an unregistered party you are good. Registering a party in the fraternity houses protects you very well, and obtaining a noise permit keeps the LexPo off your back for the most part.

Did You Know?

W&L has a ton of student governance, and for a majority of the things that people get in trouble doing, the sanctions are handled by their peers, resulting in fair punishments. However, if one feels a sanction is too harsh, they are free to appeal it.
