Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Washington and Lee is well stocked with computers that students can use. Some computer labs are well kept secrets: only the chosen few venture into the cold, dusty attic of Newcomb Hall. Others are favorite hangouts; the Commerce School labs are excellent places to find someone to share notes on the accounting test or to put a PowerPoint presentation together. But the C-School labs are notoriously crowded. A better bet is the Reid Hall combination newsroom and computer lab. The intranet allows students to save their work at any location on campus, and then access it at any other computer. There is a generous storage limit, equal to about three years of heavy-duty paper-writing and file-saving. The wireless network works extremely well and is provided across the entire campus, including all student housing.

A free computer can usually be found in any computer lab on campus, although things get very packed during and immediately before finals week. The library recently started renting out brand-new laptops for four hours at a stretch—very cool. Most students bring their own computers, but this is not completely necessary unless they value that extra assurance. University Computing is pretty strict at detecting song downloads, and they threaten to cut off the network connection of any student caught downloading or sharing prohibited files. There is a gray area regarding downloading music and movies, so be very careful if you decide to partake. The Honor System is not codified; it is based on trust, so do not be surprised if you hear of an Honor Violation coming out of such a situation.

Internet Should Be Better

Computers are effective and sound, but the wireless network is consistently very slow and issue prone. You could survive academically without a laptop but certainly not socially

University Computers

The University recently put in a variety of new computers within the library and other major buildings. They are fast and have large screens. The labs do get crowded around exam times, but you can always find a computer somewhere.

Labs Are Frequent and Available

Labs at W&L are ample and abundant and available. There is at least one in every building and more than necessary in the library. The costs for copies is a little high but not more than other schools.

The Leyburn Library was just given a $2.5 million facelift to provide much more productive study space on the first floor. In this space, there are now more than 15 computers provided for students 24 hours a day.

In the journalism school, computers come complete with high-wattage speakers and DVD drives. Students can keep one eye on Sportscenter or The O.C., courtesy of a cable television in the lab.
