Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Washington & Lee's social scene is nearly exclusively fueled by alcohol, with a little grass and smoke thrown in. That is to say, the overwhelming majority of substances found at parties or really being used anywhere for social purposes will be alcohol. This is certainly true at Greek-sponsored events, where alcohol is free and generally available to any students regardless of age. In the first-year dorms, possession of alcohol or any other illicit substance is a fairly serious offense and nearly always results in some sort of disciplinary action, though Washington & Lee is generally good about working with students to reach a mutually beneficial decision when it comes to punishment. Smoking weed in the dorms is a fairly common occurrence, but it can be easily detected, so students are starting to wise up and take their smoke off campus. Cigarettes and smokeless tobacco are fairly popular on campus, especially around periods of academic stress, though the number of regular smokers is fairly slim.

As for social pressure to either smoke or drink, the great majority of Washington & Lee students do drink, but this does not mean students have to in order to have a good time. Those who do choose to imbibe respect those students who prefer to stay dry. One final note: Fake IDs do not see frequent use at W&L, as the executive committee deems it to be an an honor code violation with the possibility of getting kicked out of school. And with free alcohol readily available at Greek-sponsored parties, the need to buy drinks illegally essentially vanishes.

Drugs Not a Big Deal

The drug scene is pretty small at W&L. I'm sure it depends on which groups you hang out with, but for the most part drinking is the activity of choice.
