Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A few years ago, the facilities at W&L were seriously lacking. The weight room, for example, looked like something off the set of Rocky (before he made it big): torn carpet, smeared windows, and rusty equipment. Now, thanks to a spending binge that would make a Washington politician proud, W&L’s campus sports a sparkling new exercise facility, a $30 million Student Commons, and a journalism school wired for the 21st century. Students can play pool and catch Monday Night Football in the Commons or break a sweat in the pristine Fitness Center. Construction on a state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot music and arts center, Lenfest Center, was completed in August 2006. The school works hard at making up for what Lexington lacks in the area of social entertainment. The administration has been investing a lot of money into building up the school and creating an environment that appeals to students.

The University has been extremely cognizant of improving the buildings that have been once seen as a blight on campus. The $2.5 million Leyburn Library improvement project has just been finished, and the improvement of Newcomb Hall is in progress for next year. As far as buying things on campus, the school bookstore has some of the basic toiletries, but for the most part, students have to go off campus to find food and other random odds and ends. With all that W&L has been doing lately, students wouldn’t be surprised if their problems with these facilities were soon addressed as well.

Library Aesthetic Needs Work

Everything is up to date and is made to look cohesive, except for the library which experienced a disaster of 1970s architecture. That said, the library is great in terms of resources.

Excellent Facilities

The commons are beautiful, convenient, luxurious, and have everything you need. The library was recently renovated and is a great place to hang out and study. Classroom buildings are good and the older ones are in the process of renovation. The gym is nice, but the fitness center is a bit small and gets overcrowded at times. Overall, the campus is extremely beautiful, and they go to great lengths around here to keep it that way. They do a stellar job - definitely one of the most beautiful campuses you will ever visit.

Facilities on campus used to be...

Facilities on campus used to be crappy, but this year they have completely renovated Leyburn, Wilson Field, etc. The University is excellent about updating facilities as they get out-of-date. Commons is a great place to hang out, get some food, and generally waste time.

Favorite Things To Do

Frisbee, football, tanning, bocce ball, and snow angels on the front lawn; late-night runs to the Commons for junk food; frat parties; packing the stands for Parents’ Weekend and Homecoming football games; intramural basketball games in the Warner Center; catching free movies in the Commons; a cappella concerts in Lee Chapel and the Commons.

Pump iron or do aerobics in the Fitness Center, catch some acoustic guitar or a comedian on select weeknights in the Commons, and take in big hits in the movie theater. For a more sophisticated evening, grab a date and head to the Lenfest Center for a performance of Shakespeare, jazz, or chorale music.
