Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Washington & Lee has managed to provide impressive, modern facilities for its students while maintaining the historic character of its storied buildings. Even now, a major renovation of the entire Colonnade is underway, with two out of five buildings completed. While the same charming red brick on the outside, the insides of the buildings now sport plasma screen TVs and impressive communications technology in the classroom. Other fairly recent additions include the University Commons, a large, mixed-use building that houses the school’s outstanding bookstore, the dining hall, and a cozy living room complete with a fireplace. Other laudable facilities around campus include the journalism school, with its state-of-the art classroom technology, and the main floor of Leyburn Library, which recently underwent a major makeover. The school's science center is also great success in terms of design and functionality.

No school is perfect, and Washington & Lee certainly has some less-than-ideal spaces. For one, Doremus Gym could use some more updated facilities. The fitness center recently got an impressive upgrade, but other areas of the gym need some improvements. Also, the lower levels of Leyburn Library could use some of the attention given to its top floor. Students joke about either avoiding the bottom spaces because of their dark atmosphere or favoring them for motivating them to get their work done and leave. That said, the University provides overall outstanding facilities, both in terms of function and aesthetics.

Renovations on the Way

Most of the facilities are extremely historic and attractive from the outside, however, the insides can feel outdated in some of the halls. That being said, there are big plans to renovate most of campus and the school is already well on their way. In a few years the facilities will be significantly better, specifically the gym. From the outside, the campus and buildings are very attractive and hold a historic collegiate personality.

Library Aesthetic Needs Work

Everything is up to date and is made to look cohesive, except for the library which experienced a disaster of 1970s architecture. That said, the library is great in terms of resources.

Excellent Facilities

The commons are beautiful, convenient, luxurious, and have everything you need. The library was recently renovated and is a great place to hang out and study. Classroom buildings are good and the older ones are in the process of renovation. The gym is nice, but the fitness center is a bit small and gets overcrowded at times. Overall, the campus is extremely beautiful, and they go to great lengths around here to keep it that way. They do a stellar job - definitely one of the most beautiful campuses you will ever visit.

Favorite Things To Do

Pump iron or do aerobics in the Fitness Center, catch some acoustic guitar or a comedian on select weeknights in the Commons, and take in big hits in the movie theater. For a more sophisticated evening, grab a date and head to the Lenfest Center for a performance of Shakespeare, jazz, or chorale music. Or catch a more casual a cappella concert in Lee Chapel or the Commons.

Students also enjoy playing Frisbee, football, and bocce ball or just tanning or making snow angels on the front lawn. Late-night runs to the Commons for junk food and attending frat parties are popular activities for night owls. Packing the stands for Parents' Weekend and Homecoming football games or for intramural basketball games in the Warner Center are fun activities for sports loves. Or just catch a free movie in the Commons!
