Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is the dominant social structure at Washington & Lee, with around 85 percent of students joining some type of fraternity or sorority during their time at the University. While certainly geared toward those looking for a more intense partying scene, Greek social functions are very accessible to virtually all campus social pockets and include high-energy venues as well as more relaxed opportunities for socializing as well. That said, one of the main criticisms made of the W&L Greek system is that it can make it tough to stay close to those outside of a student's respective fraternity or sorority. Those who want to stay good friends with others outside their organization have to end up making an intentional effort.

The University owns and maintains nearly every Greek facility, and almost all students end up living in Greek housing at some point or another in their college career. Often cited as being a positive experience, living "in the house" becomes a defined chapter in most every General's life. After living in formal Greek housing, members will often find off-campus houses to rent together. Living off campus is often, however, a preferred method of reconnecting with those non-member friends from other fraternities or sororities. In the end, life at Washington & Lee involves some major interaction with the Greek system, whether as a formal member or not.

Different than anywhere else. Greek life here is what eating clubs are to Princeton. If you a guy, you will get into a fraternity; it only depends on which fraternity. It's the same thing with girls. Most events here revolve around fraternities

Greek Life

Greek Life is very big at W&L. The nice thing about almost everyone being involved is that there is at least one house that fits almost every personality.

Basically Greece

The Greek scene is the only social scene. That is perfectly acceptable, because the Greek organizations do a superb job with running the night life. There is something happening about 6 nights a week, and on big nights frequently four very different parties, anywhere from out in the country to in the frat house basements

Did You Know? Dave Matthews Band used to play at W&L all the time until they decided to premier their "Crash" album in the Chi Psi basement in the mid-'90s. They were booed off stage and have not returned to W&L since.
