College Prowler Take
W&L is blessed with more than its fair share of attractive ladies. Perhaps it’s a “Southun thang,” but most of these ladies take great pride in fixing themselves up for every special (and not-so-special) occasion. The guys can be impressive when they want to be: a blazer, khakis, and a tie—preferably a bow tie—are standard. But because too many guys falter in the personal grooming department, the girls rate a little higher—sorry boys. Students give mixed signals about whether W&L is a promiscuous campus. But a huge online survey sponsored by the school in March 2004—the National College Health Assessment—showed that, on average, students here are actually less sexually active than their peers nationwide. Men and women at W&L seem to treat each other with respect: a tradition of gentility and courtesy persists. Ladies should expect regular, if not universal, door-holding from guys here. Now the bad news: the National College Health Assessment mentioned above also indicated that unwanted sexual touching and attempted rape goes unreported at W&L. The number of female students who reported experiencing unwanted feel-ups or attempted rape was about twice the average at the other 73 schools surveyed. School administrators are working with students, some of whom have founded abuse-awareness groups, like One in Four and the Moustache Society, to see just how deep the problem of sexual misconduct runs and how to fix it.

While there might be consequences...
While there might be consequences for being caught fooling around in, say, Lee Chapel, outside of that, the worst penalty you would pay for being caught in an intimate moment in your dorm room would be some mockery from your hallmates (or congratulations, as the case may be). |

There are way more attractive girls than attractive guys. I’ve seen gorgeous girls compete for guys they wouldn’t look twice at if we were at a state school. |

Very few people roll up to class...
Very few people roll up to class in sweats. Unlike at most campuses, our students show up to class completely decked out—women with the latest fashions complete with heels and jewelry and men with khakis and polo shirts. Everyone has a bad morning, and so you do see people with sweats and pajamas on during the day, but mainly on Thursdays after a rough Wednesday night. |

Student Health Services both...
Student Health Services both provides and encourages contraception very actively. You can get free condoms at the Student Health Center or through 25 cent vending machines if you’d like anonymity. Also, the peer health education group, LIFE, puts out condom baskets in the dorms, frat, and sorority houses prior to every major party weekend. |

The division after freshman year...
The division after freshman year between frats and sororities leads to mutated relationships, and it is very difficult to date someone in the conventional sense. People are very focused on status and popularity, rather than platonic intimacy or actually getting to know each other. Maybe this is a vestige of times when W&L was not coed and women were brought in from other schools. |

Social Scene
The social scene is huge here—students shouldn't expect to lock themselves in their room and study all the time. Even studying and writing papers sometimes become social activities, as students congregate in the C-School or J-School to commiserate. Introverted kids have a tougher time finding a niche in the midst of pretty frantic social activity, especially during the first term or two, but most eventually seem to adjust. Similarly, non-Greeks and students who never go out to frat parties can feel like the life of the University is passing them by. Advice: students should at least try the Greek scene a little bit, and sample the growing options for alternative entertainment if the frat scene doesn't measure up. The Commons has become the central meeting place on campus—students filter through by the hundreds every hour.
Hookups or Relationships?
The dating scene is extremely sparse until junior and senior years when some students move into steady relationships. Hookups are predominant on campus throughout the four years.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Some of the best times for students to meet each other are during pre-orientation trips (hiking and construction trips are available). Students can relax without the pressure of classes and feel like they're ahead of the game in learning the campus.
Dress Code
Preppy dress is standard issue here. When the weather permits, ladies often wear skirts and spring dresses to class, accessorized with calf boots or heels. On balmy days, the stereotypical W&L man sports a slightly ruffled haircut, a polo shirt (preferably pastel), khakis, and sandals. (In nastier weather, the campus runs amok in grey North Face jackets). However, mad props to the iconoclasts who wear cowboy boots and suede jackets to class. You know who you are.
