Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s elementary, my dear Watson. The students feel remarkably safe at Washington and Lee. Lexington is a sleepy little town at heart, an insulated cocoon with a very low rate of reported violent crime. Partly because of the one-strike Honor Code, students feel free to trust each other with their property. That trust seems to be justified nearly all of the time. Most freshmen don’t lock the doors to their dorm rooms, and some upperclassmen keep the habit even after they move into town. In days of yore, students could leave their laptops, purses, or wallets in full view in the library for days on end, and find them undisturbed when they came back—or so the story goes. Today, it’s probably not smart to take those chances. Laptops and books have been stolen on campus within the past few years, but the computer thefts (and probably the book heist) were done by non-students. Security guards are not exactly omnipresent on campus, but they respond quickly to calls, and their relations with students tend to be friendly. They can help students with a variety of problems, like pumping up a run-down car battery or opening up a locked door.

The results of a nationwide survey of students were recently released to the student media. It seemed to show that a significant number of cases of unwanted sexual touching and attempted rape go unreported at W&L. The University is making great strides to bring this problem to the forefront and address all of the outreach groups set up for students in such a situation.

Safety

I have never heard of any students have any problems with safety. I regularly leave my car unlocked with the windows down and have never had any problems. As long as you aren't doing anything spectaculary stupid, campus security won't bother you either.

Safe

I have never felt unsafe on Washington and Lee's campus. We are a small community , there are a lot of social events and one of the most important things is our honour system. You can keep your doors unlocked, you can leave your possessions anywhere on campus and you can trust your classmates.
