Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Being a small school nestled in a small town, Washington & Lee has a very safe campus where students can feel comfortable and focus on their studies. Also, thanks to an honor system that maintains a one-strike policy for any cases of lying, cheating, or stealing, theft is virtually non-existent among students. For more public areas, however, like the library or University Commons, no valuables like laptops should be left out, or you could learn the hard way that the honor system does not apply beyond campus boundaries. That said, no part of campus is unsafe, and students can stroll carefree at any time of day or night, thanks in large part to the 24-hour campus security patrols. The Student Health Center is also found highly accessible to campus and provides valuable health services ranging from helping out with colds to dealing with those who may have had a little too much to drink that night.

While campus and Lexington are very safe, some off-campus locations are higher-risk zones. Many Washington & Lee students see that as an apparent disregard for the honor system off campus, leading to sexual assault rates that are above the national average. Though it's nothing that common sense and self-awareness cannot handle, it should be noted that this contrast between environments on and off campus is an issue students are working on. Ultimately, though, Washington & Lee is a great, safe place to go to school thanks to a robust, alert security force and a trustworthy student body.

Safety

I have never heard of any students have any problems with safety. I regularly leave my car unlocked with the windows down and have never had any problems. As long as you aren't doing anything spectaculary stupid, campus security won't bother you either.

Safe

I have never felt unsafe on Washington and Lee's campus. We are a small community , there are a lot of social events and one of the most important things is our honour system. You can keep your doors unlocked, you can leave your possessions anywhere on campus and you can trust your classmates.
