Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most of the nightlife at W&L is supplied by fraternity parties. Unlike in some other college towns, the bar scene is pretty sparse, with a grand total of three establishments. The Palms is relatively popular for students over 21—a 21st birthday there is a W&L tradition—but most of the partying still happens in frat basements. The newest restaurant/bar in town, Macado’s, is on the rise with student popularity. It is a place where Townies, Veemies, and students from W&L hang out, so it is very diverse. There are some pretty good drink specials, and the food is not half bad either—definitely worth a visit.

To its credit, the University is trying to provide alternative entertainment, with weekly movies in the Student Commons, comedians, and Common Grounds—nights of free music, coffee, and cookies. Off campus, the bowling alley remains a favorite, with unlimited games on Thursday nights. The offerings for students who are not interested in the party scene have also gotten noticeably better in the past four years.

Nightlife Is Fraternity Parties

There are no clubs or bars in Lexington, Virginia. This can get annoying as soon as students reach drinking age, but fraternity parties are always an option for these students. The frequency of fraternity parties and their magnitude defines the nightlife of Washington and Lee.

great.. assuming..

Great nightlife... assuming you like frat parties. They're a lot of fun depending on where you go, alcohol is all free (or paid for by frat dues... free for freshmen, girls, and GDI's) and a lot of fun. we like to rage.

Frat Parties

There is no other night life than frat parties. There are two bars in town--the Palms, which is mostly frequented by townies, and Macado's, which seniors only go to sometimes to pregame the frat parties. Being underage is not a problem, as fraternities supply nearly all the alcohol one needs. Even as a senior girl, I only have to buy maybe 1 handle a month to pregame. Getting to and from parties is easy with Traveller. Mnost students go out at least three times a week. The big party nights are Wed, Fri, Sat, and the occasional Thurs, but smaller parties happen nearly every night. The University has an open-party policy, so anyone can go to any party. There is at least one party every few weeks that nearly the entire school comes to.

The Minority Students Association throws an annual “cabaret” that is a hoppin’ good time, and the International House sponsors DJ parties that are both sketchy and really, really cool. The school also sponsors the Fancy Dress Ball once a year (fancydress.wlu.edu).

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

The Palms

This is the center of all W&L bar activity. This corner bar is a key mixing place for juniors and seniors, and it can get pretty packed. Slow service is a nagging complaint because of understaffing, but the food is pretty good—especially the burgers.

Diggers (Inside the Southern Inn)

Diggers, set inside an up-scale restaurant, is distinctly more buttoned-down: rowdiness is a no-no, unlike at the Palms.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Try fraternity parties or off-campus house parties. Do not try that fake ID—if you’re caught, you might get kicked out of school.
