Best Time to Look for a Place

Winter term of freshman year—seriously. Students can wait longer to look, but they may have to rely on friends who already have housing. Best bet is to call real estate offices or ask around—W&L does not provide official help in getting off-campus housing.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Nearly all upperclassmen live off campus, and Lexington offers plenty of off-campus housing opportunities, both in town and out in the country. While the quantity may not be an issue, quality can vary substantially depending on the abode, and landlords can either end up being a curse or a blessing. Typically, students will try and find houses among their upperclassmen friends they like and establish a tradition of passing it down through the years. The lines often run within Greek organizations. Single students and groups looking from scratch will almost certainly have good luck in finding an affordable living space.

Because Lexington is nestled in the mountains, snow can present a definite problem to students who live out in the country. Those more used to city streets and well-plowed lanes will have a crash course, hopefully not literally, in winter time driving if they choose to live outside city limits. Both living in town and out have their respective benefits, however, and the city and surrounding area provide ample affordable opportunities for both. Living off campus is a strong W&L tradition made simple by Lexington’s ample, affordable, and often cozy housing.

Living in the "Country"

A popular area for off-campus housing is located in what is referred to as "the country." This area is a 7 minute drive away from campus, or a 2 mile bike, run, or walk. The area includes a variety of great living options. There are many houses, which are offered at good rent rates and are of a nice quality. Most of W&L's off-campus parties are located in the country, so living out there makes getting to and from parties convenient. And most houses in the country have easy access to the night bus service.

Pretty Easy

Lots of nice options with off-campus housing as a senior/junior. Typically you live in houses passed down by your fraternity or sorority with 4-5 other people. Frat off-campus houses tend to be disgusting, as they host lots of parties and hardly ever get totally clean. Sorority houses are much neater, but I guess that's to be expected.

Lucky or Not

Off campus housing can be spotty. Students often complain of less than desirable landlords. The good part of this, of course, is that you don't have to worry about ruining a rental (aka parties can definitely happen).
