Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Overall, parking is a pretty good deal at Washington & Lee. Yes, first-years are required to park in a lot about a mile from campus, but since they all move in packs anyway, the walk never feels as long as it is. The Greek houses where most students live their sophomore years all have relatively ready access to parking, and for those upperclassmen who live more than a mile off campus, they can pay the low fee for the privilege to park in the four-story parking deck that's a short walk from campus. The deck does get crowded from mid-morning to around 4 p.m. every day, but unless there is a major event, spaces can usually be found somewhere in the four levels.

That said, parking in town is a whole different proposition. Local authorities are strict when it comes to time limits and will not hesitate to hand out parking tickets to drivers who have overstayed their two-hour limit. Street parking near campus is limited, and on Lexington’s narrow streets, parallel parking can be a little intimidating. Besides tickets, police will not hesitate to tow a car that is significantly over time in a space. The point is: Try to get into legitimate University spaces. They will be the least hassle.

Meh

Freshmen have to walk 15 minutes to get to their cars which poses a problem for first-years. Upperclassmen have it better but not great. The parking deck is a decent distance from the main campus classrooms, but nothing too ridiculous.

Easy and Close

Freshman have to park far away but that's fine because they don't need cars anyways. Everyone else either lives close enough to walk or can park in the garage that is very close to everything on campus. It's easy to drive around town and live with or without a car, but parking is certainly no hindrance

Getting a Parking Permit

Although the security office tries to discourage freshmen from bringing cars to campus, permits are available for the asking (and a $50 fee). Incoming freshmen are mailed a parking registration form in the summer before matriculation, but they cannot park in town for more than two hours. W&L Security tows their cars after this, even if they are in 12-hour or unlimited-time spots.
