Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Three words: not so good. W&L freshmen have to park in an outdoor lot about half a mile from the dorms, which can be a major pain in bad weather. There is a large, four-story parking garage for students living in Gaines or the Woods Creek apartments (students who live a set distance away from campus can also use it). But construction has torn up outdoor lots close to Gaines and the Woods Creek apartments, pushing more cars into the covered garage, which is now at 100 percent capacity from mid-morning until after lunch. Moral of the story: students who are late to class may have to grab a parking spot in town.

Lexington, mercifully, does not have metered parking. Most parking spots off campus have two-hour limits, although some go for 12 hours. Students can theoretically park indefinitely on some side streets further from campus, but local homeowners might get nervous seeing an unknown car parked near their front porch. There are those students who take the risk to park illegally, both on and off campus, but as discussed earlier, they are usually risking a ticket and a towing bill.

Meh

Freshmen have to walk 15 minutes to get to their cars which poses a problem for first-years. Upperclassmen have it better but not great. The parking deck is a decent distance from the main campus classrooms, but nothing too ridiculous.

Easy and Close

Freshman have to park far away but that's fine because they don't need cars anyways. Everyone else either lives close enough to walk or can park in the garage that is very close to everything on campus. It's easy to drive around town and live with or without a car, but parking is certainly no hindrance

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Although the security office tries to discourage freshmen from bringing cars to campus, permits are available for the asking (and a $50 fee). Incoming freshmen are mailed a parking registration form in the summer before matriculation, however, they cannot park in town for more than two hours. W&L Security tows their cars after this, even if they are in 12-hour or unlimited-time spots.

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot
For freshmen, there are no safe alternatives except the outdoor lot on the fringe of campus. For upperclassmen, the covered parking garage is prime real estate.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here!
Washington Street between the front lawn and Early-Fielding Center. The two-hour spots are convenient—and coveted.
