Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A car makes life at W&L a whole lot easier. Because Lexington is such a small town and many restaurants, stores, and parties are within walking distance, students can get by without one. Hitching rides with friends for trips to Wal-Mart or Roanoke is probably the most common way to get around. But a car brings the wider world closer, which is extremely valuable when you’re in, well, such a small town. Its particularly necessary for the upperclassmen, since most live outside of town, though investing in a bike is also a good way to get from point A to point B.

In 2003, W&L introduced Traveler, a sober-drive shuttle service that takes students from campus to parties and back again until 2 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Before the program got off the ground, some alumni were concerned that the school was making it easier for students to get to off-campus drinking parties. But Traveler seems to be doing well in preventing drunk driving and getting students home safely. Now, drivers just have to focus on being on time. There are new concerns that the recent campus strictness may cause parties to move even further off campus outside of Traveler’s route, which was recently limited to a five-mile radius. This could lead to potential problems with students getting stranded or driving drunk.

Walking Usually Works

Public transportation is usually not necessary as Lexington is a fairly small town. There are shuttle buses to and from Walmart and other areas of interest. Traveller runs at night taking students to and from the dorms and fraternity houses to off campus houses.

Traveller

Traveller is the free sober-ride system that runs Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm-2am to get students to and from parties. Sometimes you have to fight to get on Traveller, and when they say they aren't coming back past 2am they mean it. During Pledgeship, sober pledges tend to drive students to and from parties as well. It is pretty necessary to have a car as a junior or senior, desirable as a sophomore and probably not needed as a freshman (although there are definitely times where you'll wish you had one).

The Metrolink and Metrobus

An above-ground metro that runs to most key locations in the downtown area, and to Lambert International Airport, but not much else. Regular tickets cost $1.65, and the Metrolink runs until around 1:30 a.m. on weeknights, and 1 a.m. on weekends. The Metrobus runs throughout St. Louis and accepts the same tickets as Metrolink.
