Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Being in the mountains means getting mountain weather, with all its joys and woes, and Lexington certainly experiences both over the course of the year. Set at a relatively high altitude for the East Coast, Lexington's temperatures can vary substantially over a 24-hour period, and storms can roll in with little warning. Students often joke about the need for a mid-day outfit change as temperatures rise from nippy to toasty quickly throughout the day. Summers are typically hot and dry with abundant sunshine and fairly frequent afternoon deluges, most of which are intense but short. Fall brings some of the area's most favorable weather with bright sunshine, crisp days, fresh air, and temperatures ranging from chilly in the mornings to baskingly warm in the afternoons. Winters will prove tough for Southerners and West Coast natives, and may surprise even a few New Englanders with their intensity. Snowfall can be expected at least once a year, sometimes affording some great sledding opportunities. Spring is a welcome reprieve to the hard winter months, bringing soft showers, balmier temperatures, and a more humid atmosphere.

However bipolar it is, the weather at W&L is part of what makes it a great place to go to school. If the steel gray skies seem to only bring despair, a few days' patience almost always brings bright sunshine. Summers can be blazing, and the dorms are not outfitted with central air, making box fans a must. A matching winter necessity is a heavy coat and a good pair of boots that can handle snow. A few warmer items for the fall will be a welcome addition as well. Lexington always keeps a few tricks up its sleeve–a random 70-degree day can be expected at least once a month, regardless of the season.
