Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The weather at Washington and Lee, true to form, varies wildly between steamy humidity, blue-sky glory, and frigid nastiness. There are four distinct seasons: hot and muggy in the early fall, crisp and nippy around Halloween, bitterly cold at Christmas time, and absolutely beautiful in the spring. Of course, the weather sometimes throws curveballs, and students have to be prepared. During the winter, moods tend to take a turn for the worse; a combination of the graying weather and heavier courseloads is enough to get even the most cheerful students down. For those that stick around during the summer time, be prepared to sweat it out, literally; summers are hot and humid, and air-conditioning becomes a necessity.

Some things never change: the freshman dorms at W&L still don’t have air conditioning, so students either swelter through their first few weeks or buy a fan. Definitely choose the latter option. But it’s important to remember that the early school year heat doesn’t last for too long. The best thing to do is come prepared for all sorts of weather, or make sure to grab winter gear during Thanksgiving break. What makes up for the hot summer and long winter would be spring. During the spring, the weather is gorgeous, and there is a plethora of outdoor activities to keep students occupied.

No Effect

There is rarely extreme weather. When it does snow the school is usually good about canceling classes.
