College Prowler Take
Even though Wash U isn’t the most wired campus in the country (compared to, say, Carnegie Mellon University or MIT), it has all of the necessary resources: Ethernet connections in every room, printers scattered around campus, file-sharing networks, and wireless in every building. With most dorms having 24-hour computer labs and over 2,500 total computers on campus (both Macs and PCs), there is always one available. Most students choose to bring laptops instead of desktops because they prefer their mobility. With a laptop, you can go to the library to work on a group project or stay in your dorm and writing an essay on your common room couch. And desktops can be a real pain in an already-cramped dorm room. A note on computer facilities: the most commonly used labs on Wash U’s campus are the Arts and Sciences lab in the basement of Eads Hall (free printing) and the computer floor of Olin Library. However, there are plenty of computers in less frequented and more pleasant spots, like the Social Sciences Computing Facility (SSCF), which enjoys a broad-window view onto campus from Eliot Hall, or the lab in the beautiful G.W. Brown School of Social Work Library.

The computer network is top of the line. There are computers and computer labs all across campus, so they are never very crowded. It is convenient to have a computer, but not necessary.

I never bring my computer anywhere...
I never bring my computer anywhere and I have never had a problem. There are computers in the library, in the library cafe, in the student center, in the Business school, even in one of the academic buildings. Also, there is wireless almost everywhere, so if you do want to bring your computer you can get onto the internet easily!

The computer network is easily accessible. Most kids have their own computers, so you can pretty much find a computer in a lab if you need one. For convenience's sake, though, bring a computer. Then you can work anywhere you want to on campus.

Most people bring their own computers, but don't worry about bringing a printer. There are printers on campus where you can print for free. Just don't go during the busy hours!

Everyone gets a Wash U e-mail address, and you can be connected from your dorm room. There are computer labs throughout campus, but they tend to be crowded during certain times of day. I found it more convenient to have one in my room, but there are plenty of people without their own computers and they manage fine without one. Most of the dorms have small computer centers in them as well. |
