Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Even though Wash U isn’t the most wired campus in the country (compared to, say, Carnegie Mellon University or MIT), it has all of the necessary resources: Ethernet connections in every room, printers scattered around campus, file-sharing networks, and wireless in every building. With most dorms having 24-hour computer labs and over 2,500 total computers on campus (both Macs and PCs), there is always one available.

Most students choose to bring laptops instead of desktops because they prefer their mobility. With a laptop, you can go to the library to work on a group project or stay in your dorm and writing an essay on your common room couch. And desktops can be a real pain in an already-cramped dorm room. A note on computer facilities: the most commonly used labs on Wash U’s campus are the Arts and Sciences lab in the basement of Eads Hall (free printing) and the computer floor of Olin Library. However, there are plenty of computers in less frequented and more pleasant spots, like the Social Sciences Computing Facility (SSCF), which enjoys a broad-window view onto campus from Eliot Hall, or the lab in the beautiful G.W. Brown School of Social Work Library.

Not a Necessity but Recommended

All libraries, dorm, and most lab buildings have some sort of computer lab. It is definitely not mandatory to bring a computer to WashU but I would highly recommend it. It is just so much easier to be able to carry around a computer with you then have to walk places to check email and stuff. The computers available to students vary but they are all relatively modern in design and are easy to use.

Good Computers, Bad Wifi

The WiFi is not good--until I got an ethernet cord, it was impossible for me to steam any videos online. After getting the ethernet cord, the internet is usable; not extremely fast, but I can always stream videos. There is a computer lab and printer in every dorm, which is pretty reliable; there are almost always computers open and I haven't had an issue with printing. Student Tech Support is really great, very reliable, quick to fix almost any problem.

Labs Are Readily Available

The computer labs at WashU are readily available; however, it is extremely necessary for one to have his or her own computer. Unless one is printing in his or her dorm, printing isn't free. The wireless access is not the best, but connection with an ethernet cord is very fast.
